๐Ÿ“Mentorship Nuru Youth Collectiv is a dedicated and passionate nonprofit organization committed to youth empowerment and alleviating unemployment among young people in South Africa

Ethos: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Our mission is

to equip and inspire the youth with the necessary skills and support to become successful entrepreneurs and embrace opportunities in the digital transformation era

Through our school interventions, we work closely with learners in both secondary and high schools, providing comprehensive training in entrepreneurship and digital transformation. Recognizing that early intervention is key, we empower young students with skills and knowledge that go beyond the traditional curriculum, cultivating innovation, creativity, and an entrepreneurial mindset from a young age

For those young individuals leaving school, we offer targeted training programs that prepare them for the ever-evolving job market. By equipping them with digital skills and exposing them to the potential of entrepreneurial ventures, we empower them to navigate the dynamic economic landscape and create their own opportunities

Mentorship and coaching play a vital role in our organization. We believe in the power of guidance and support, and thus offer one-on-one mentoring and coaching to each of our participants. Our experienced mentors provide invaluable insights, advice, and encouragement, guiding young individuals in their personal and professional development

Fifty years since the Soweto Uprising. And today, youth unemployment in South Africa still sits above 60% for young people aged 15โ€“24. Fifty years on.

Nuru Youth Collectiv is not here to only observe. We are here to move.

South Africaโ€™s youth unemployment rate remains among the highest in the world.

More than 60% of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 are not employed, not in education, and not in training.

This is not a skills crisis alone. It is a structural crisis. A systemic failure to create the enabling environments, the pathways, and the investment in young people that would allow their potential to convert into contribution.

Nuru Youth Collectiv exists at the intersection of this reality.

We do not accept youth unemployment as inevitable. We work every day โ€” through programmes, mentorship, advocacy, and partnerships โ€” to build the bridges between young people and the opportunities they deserve.

But we also advocate loudly for the policy, investment, and institutional change that only those with decision-making power can provide.

Young people are not a problem to be managed. They are a resource to be developed. And Africaโ€™s future depends on how well we do that work today.

If your organisation is looking to partner with Nuru in this work โ€” we are ready for that conversation.

Nuru Youth Collectivโ€™s Founder and President, Lerato Phelane CA(SA), a few months ago, had the privilege of meeting Rebeca Grynspan โ€” one of the most consequential voices in global multilateralism today.

is currently one of the candidates in the race for Secretary-General โ€” a race that has drawn significant attention globally, not least because of the long-overdue conversation about gender representation at the highest levels of the UN system.

She brings to that candidacy a remarkable track record: as Secretary-General of , as former Vice President of Costa Rica, and as a consistent, principled advocate for the Global South, for trade equity, and for development frameworks that centre the worldโ€™s most vulnerable populations.

For Nuru, this encounter carries a significance that goes beyond the photograph.

It is a reminder of why Nuru exists.

We build young leaders today so that the next generation of Africans does not merely observe global conversations โ€” they lead them. So that the rooms where decisions are made about the future of humanity include African voices, African perspectives, and African solutions.

The 2026 UN Secretary-General selection is drawing significant attention to the question of gender representation โ€” and if elected, Rebeca Grynspan could become the first woman to serve as United Nations Secretary-General in the organisationโ€™s 80-year history.

That would be historic.

And it would send a powerful signal to every young woman on this continent who has been told that the highest rooms are not for her.

Nuru believes they are.

We congratulate Madame Rebeca Grynspan on her candidacy and we will be watching this process with great interest and hope.
