A small act with a lasting legacy 💙

EuroCollege students from the Netherlands recently took part in South Africa's Tourism Green Lung initiative, supported by SATSA, by planting four indigenous trees at the historic Vergelegen Wine Estate in the Cape Winelands.

The visit formed part of an international business study tour focused on hospitality, entrepreneurship and future career opportunities, giving 23 students the chance to engage directly with South Africa’s tourism sector.

What stood out most was not only the tree planting, but the people they met along the way: tourism operators, hospitality businesses, educators and young entrepreneurs helping to shape South Africa’s future.

This is the kind of responsible tourism we value. Practical, connected and rooted in real impact.

A recent stay at Webersburg Wine Estate offered a wonderful reminder of the depth and quality that sits within the SATSA member community.

Nestled on the slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, Webersburg brings together Cape Dutch heritage, working wine estate charm, warm hospitality and a strong sense of place. With accommodation, wine tasting, dining, conferencing and event facilities available on the estate, it offers a thoughtful base for both leisure and business travellers exploring the Cape Winelands.

For the trade, properties like Webersburg add real value to Southern African itineraries, particularly for clients seeking a stay that combines heritage, scenery, wine, food and easy access to Stellenbosch and the surrounding Winelands.

Thank you to the Webersburg team for hosting us and for continuing to contribute to the quality and diversity of South African tourism.

“From the moment I arrived to the moment I left, the service was impeccable. I was so well taken care of by the most wonderful and attentive team, who made every detail feel considered. The special touches, beautiful accommodation and consistently high standard of hospitality made the experience feel truly world-class.” ~Kim Taylor, SATSA Communications Manager

At Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026, SATSA CEO David Frost joined tourism ministers, government leaders, tourism boards and private-sector stakeholders in supporting the Africa’s Travel Indaba pledge.

The pledge is a collective commitment to grow Africa’s tourism economy through collaboration, sustainability, stronger cross-border connectivity, inclusive tourism growth and greater benefit for local communities.

It is a powerful reminder that Africa’s tourism future depends on partnership, shared purpose and the ability to work together across borders to tell our own story.

Nearly 10,000 delegates were at Africa’s Travel Indaba this week. Thirty of them are here because of the incubator programme.

The SATSA Tourism Business Incubator, implemented by Sigma International, has walked alongside more than 120 small tourism businesses over the past three years, helping move them from potential to procurement-ready. Getting those businesses into rooms like this one is as important as any skill the programme teaches. A referral, an introduction, a first contract — this is where those things happen.

This week also created space for something just as important as visibility: connection.

The beach braai hosted by Sigma International was a special evening of conversation, relationship-building and shared purpose, bringing together people committed to building, uplifting and shaping something bigger than themselves. For incubatees, these moments matter. They build confidence, deepen networks and remind small businesses that access to opportunity is often shaped as much by relationships as it is by readiness.

Before Indaba opened its doors, the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands led with an important event. On Sunday, Brahman Hills was announced as the second Green Lung site in South Africa. What began at Vergelegen Wine Estate in February 2026 has now expanded to KZN – a private-sector-led initiative that gives tourism businesses a practical, auditable way to meet ESG and ESD requirements.

🍃Sponsor tree planting to offset carbon.
🍃Channel ESD spend into tourism SMMEs.
🍃Add Brahman Hills to your guest itineraries as a conscious travel experience.

Led by Sigma International, this is sustainability that exists outside the conference room. The expansion drew support from across the sector, including Jerry Mabena, Chairman of the Tourism Business Council of South Africa, who noted that the Green Lung represents exactly the kind of practical, inclusive leadership the industry needs.
