2025 was the year climate finance in Southern Africa took centre stage! 🌍✨

From COP30 to the G20, we’ve seen a global push for equitable funding, carbon market potential, and a shift from debt to innovative green bonds. But at Fair Finance Southern Africa, we know that high-level talk must lead to on-the-ground change.

As we look back at a year of growth, we are gearing up for an even bolder 2026. We continue to:

🔍 Holding PFIs Accountable: We are moving beyond vague "green" promises. Our 2024 policy assessment demands that Public Finance Institutions (PFIs) implement concrete, time-bound fossil fuel phase-outs.

📊 Transparency First: Accountability requires data. We continue to call for PFIs to disclose greenhouse gas emissions across their entire portfolios, not just isolated projects.

📚Education: Working with coalition partners to ensure frontline communities are informed, educated and heard in every boardroom. From the Fair Finance School to webinars, we are bringing information to the communities.

The finance gap is huge, but our momentum is bigger.

The G20 Leaders' Declaration falls short of its own ambition.

Measured against South Africa's stated goals of inclusive growth, sustainable development, financial stability, and global equity, the final commitments reveal a discouraging mismatch. The provisions do little to address the systemic problems required for a that could offer true for Africa.

📢 URGENT MESSAGE TO G20 LEADERS FROM AFRICA.

The G20 Summit is on African soil for the first time, and African climate movements have a clear, unified demand: Climate Justice Must Be Debt-Free.

African nations cannot fight the climate crisis while crushed under unsustainable debt and finance that only comes in the form of loans. It's time for a systemic change from climate loans to grant-based finance.

The Ask is Clear:
✅ Comprehensive Debt Relief.
✅ A mandatory minimum 50% grant ratio at Development Banks for adaptation finance.
✅ A fully grant-based Loss and Damage facility, accessible NOW!
"Finance is the real blockage," says 350Africa.org's Interim South Africa Team Lead, Tshepo Peele. The political will for a funded, fair transition must be shown by the G20.

At the , Raymond Matlala, called for urgent action to tackle plastic toxins and industrial pollution, noting their growing threat to public health, food security, and the environment. He also stressed that clean energy must be recognised as a human right by 2030 and that the transition should create dignified, local jobs through mineral beneficiation and industrialisation while protecting workers currently in fossil-fuel sectors. These priorities, he said, are key to climate justice, a just transition, and energy democracy. That’s .

Why does Development Finance matter? DFIs have a mandate to fund development, but their policies often trail international standards. We're demanding transparency and an end to funding fossil fuels! Learn more about this in our latest policy assessment report here: https://bit.ly/4mMN3aB
