On the 21 March we came together not just to watch a documentary but to remember, reflect and recommit to the values of Human Rights Day.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us at the Trevor Huddleston Memorial Centre to commemorate this important day. Your presence made the gathering powerful and meaningful.

Special thanks to Enver Samuel for bringing us the impactful documentary Murder in Paris: The Assassination of Dulcie September a story that continues to challenge and inspire us.

We are deeply grateful to the Wits School of Arts for their beautiful performance and to the incredible Mandla Mlangeni and Yonela Mnana for their moving music that truly elevated the experience.

A big thank you to the Gauteng Film Commission (GFC)for generously providing refreshments and supporting this gathering.

To everyone who attended thank you for showing up for engaging and for keeping the spirit of human rights alive. We hope this is the beginning of many more meaningful conversations and collaborations.

Sophiatown 1955

They came at dawn
not with thunder
but with papers and quiet boots
and the sun rose unsure
where homes would stand by noon.

Walls that once held laughter
leaned into dust,
names written in chalk on doors
became echoes in the wind.
Streets that knew music
now learned the language of loss.

Mothers folded memories into suitcases,
fathers carried silence on their backs,
children searched for yesterday
in the pockets of tomorrow.

No hatred walked these roads
only sorrow,
only the heavy ache of leaving
without wanting to go.
Only the sound of lives uprooted
without farewell.

Yet even as bricks fell
the spirit refused to kneel.
Hope hid in songs
in stories whispered after dark
in the promise that home
is more than walls.

Sophiatown still breathes
in every heart that remembers
not as rubble
but as courage
not as loss alone
but as love that could not be removed.

“My Sophiatown, I loved you because you were a place where I could breathe, where laughter lived in broken houses and hope danced barefoot in the streets.”
