Every Step Matters 👩🏻‍🦯🦯

Dr. Yolandie Coetzee was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) at the age of 30, a progressive eye condition that gradually affected her vision.

She highlights the life-changing role that white canes and Orientation & Mobility training can play, not only in helping visually impaired people move safely in their environment, but in reconnecting with the world around them and reclaiming independence.

Without mobility tools, assistive devices, and training, something many people take for granted, being fully present in the world around you, can become increasingly difficult. Independence and connection to everyday life can begin to feel out of reach.

Every Step Matters 🦯👩‍🦯

Beyond mobility and navigation, white cane training can help visually impaired people reconnect with and be more present in the world around them.

For Dr Yolandie Coetzee, this has been one of the biggest changes in her journey with vision loss.

At the age of 30, she was diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), a progressive eye condition that gradually affected her vision.

Dr Yolandie reached out to the South African Guide Dogs Association, where she worked with Orientation and Mobility Practitioner, Queen, to receive white cane training.

Your donation towards our Every Step Matters campaign can help more visually impaired South Africans receive, white canes along with vital white cane and skills of daily living training at no cost to them.

🐶Puppy Block Update🐶

O***a and her 7 XY pups are doing well, 25 days into life.

O***a is an attentive and caring Mom...unless its her mealtime in which case her priorities shift temporarily.

She is enjoying short spells on her raised block area, away from those budding teeth, but at this point her pups are still mostly gumming Mom and each other as they explore their surrounding a little more each day.

They have started on solids this week, and although polite eaters (unlike their permanently hungry Mom) they are eating very well.

Volunteer Puppy Raisers Needed!

Raising a future Guide or Service Dog may begin with one puppy, but it quickly becomes a shared journey.

One of our Cape Town volunteer puppy raisers shared a reflection on what it feels like to raise alongside your puppy’s littermates and the special community that forms along the way 💛

"When you raise a puppy for the South African Guide-Dogs Association, you get to do it with other like-minded people. Usually, you share the journey with your pup's litter mates. So the unique bond they have as siblings gets extended to the group of humans raising the pups.

It's such a special experience to have people walking alongside you with their gorgeous pups who are all at the same stage and part of the same family. And holding us all, are amazing trainers who teach, guide and support us all the time.

The photos below show the N litter in Cape Town when our babies were 10 weeks old. As a group we have been through puppy class, no sleep nights, early mornings, frustrated walks and aaah cute moments together. The pups from left are Nellie, Nikki, Nolan and Ned and we all love them dearly."

Thank you to our puppy raisers, and especially to Tania Robbertze, whose support for our organisation extends beyond raising future assistance dogs.
