I am reaching out to request support for my campaign as a Councillor Candidate for Ward 55, City of Johannesburg.

I have been asked by members of the community to represent their interests, particularly those of residents who feel that historically disadvantaged communities have not received adequate attention regarding service delivery and community needs.

A PERSONAL TESTIMONY: REMEMBERING WHERE WE COME FROM
I grew up during the time of apartheid, and I know the smell of apartheid. I know the hardship, the fear and the pain that black families experienced.
We were forced to move to rural areas and away from urban life. People were killed, and others disappeared without a trace. These are not stories I heard from a history book. They are experiences that shaped my childhood and my family.
I remember my grandfather, Kuku Rosemary Mama, and the painful stories of how people were treated and called names by Bantustan leaders. I also remember hearing about Bra Khusta, who was active in Port Elizabeth, and about leaders in the Walmer Location. I remember what my mother told me about Nelson Mandela — a man I did not personally know at the time, but whose name became associated with the struggle against apartheid after his imprisonment by the apartheid government.
I remember the Hippo trucks and the fear they represented. I remember soldiers, the beatings, and the boots used against ordinary people. These memories remain with me because I experienced that reality.
I also remember the United Democratic Front and people such as Allan Boesak, who were part of the broader struggle against apartheid and the marginalisation of communities.
I am still connected to Gqeberha, and I witnessed segregation with my own eyes. I did not need anybody to explain apartheid to me. I lived through its consequences.
That is why I become concerned when I see South Africans discussing political choices without remembering the history that brought us here. People have the right to make their own political choices, but I believe those choices should be informed by our history, our communities and the sacrifices made by previous generations.
I also believe that today's South Africa must seriously confront corruption, unemployment, crime, drugs, gang violence, inequality and the condition of local economies. These problems affect ordinary people every

PARTNERSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT: UPPSA & MOVE SA
The Office of the President of the United People’s Party of South Africa (UPPSA) announces its partnership with MOVE SA, a political party whose approach, according to UPPSA, is centred on what it describes as fearless politics.
WHY MOVE SA?
The partnership follows discussions between the leadership of UPPSA and the President of MOVE SA, where both organisations presented their programmes and identified areas of common ground.
Over the past two months, MOVE SA has also supported the payment of cleaners working at Kya Sand and Diepsloot. UPPSA intends to explore extending similar support to communities in Johannesburg South.
THE 2026 LOCAL ELECTIONS
UPPSA has identified Ward 55 as the ward it intends to specifically target in the coming local elections. UPPSA states that it will also identify wards for Proportional Representation (PR) participation.
UPPSA intends to conduct community engagement and campaigning across wards, while maintaining its stated commitment to serving residents regardless of political affiliation.
FIVE LOCAL PRIORITIES
1. DIRECT ACCOUNTABILITY
Residents should have clear channels to hold local representatives and institutions accountable.
2. HOUSING & LAND
UPPSA will place housing and access to land among its key local-government priorities.
3. DIRECT SERVICE DELIVERY
The focus will include practical local issues such as water, electricity, roads, sanitation and other municipal services.
4. LOCAL ECONOMIES FOR LOCAL PEOPLE
UPPSA will promote opportunities for local businesses, entrepreneurs, workers and communities to participate in local economic activity.
5. FAIR & SIMPLE RATES AND TAXES
UPPSA will advocate for consideration of a flat-rate approach to municipal rates and taxes as part of its local-government programme.
