📣 Strengthening Social Accountability for SRHR

We’re proud to support a powerful step forward in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) through community-driven action.

This week, Ipas Africa Southern Region facilitated a training for local stakeholders (including SMAGs, NHCS members, and community volunteers) in Itezhi-Tezhi district located in the Southern Province of Zambia focused on strengthening social accountability mechanisms.

The training equipped participants with practical tools to:

- Monitor and improve the quality of SRHR services
- Engage constructively with health systems and local leadership
- Amplify community voices, especially for women, adolescents, and underserved groups

By building the capacity of community structures, we are creating stronger partnerships between communities and health systems, ensuring that SRH services are more responsive, inclusive, and accountable.

đź’¬ When communities are empowered, systems work better for everyone.

Officially closing the three-day Zambia CTS Nexus Convening on Child Marriage, Teenage Pregnancy, and School Dropout at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Lusaka this afternoon, Norwegian Honorary Consul Boyd Simposya reaffirmed his government’s dedication to initiatives aimed at improving the well-being of Zambians.

Mr. Simposya noted that the Zambian Government is working tirelessly to uplift the lives of its people, a commitment that has resonated positively with the Norwegian Government.

Speaking at the same event, Ipas ASR Co-Director Chalumba Mutengo explained that the two-day Technical Assessment and Scoreboard Development meeting with stakeholders was a process aimed at examining the ecosystem driving high rates of child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and school dropout in Zambia.
He stated that stakeholders conducted the CTS Nexus Ecosystem Assessment using the eight pillars framework.
At the conclusion of the two-day workshop, stakeholders developed a national CTS Scoreboard outlining priority areas for action. Participants subsequently signed the scoreboard as a validation of the final document.

A major three-day meeting on Child Marriage, Teenage Pregnancy, and School Dropouts (CTS NEXUS) kicked off today at Radson Blue Hotel in Lusaka, Zambia organized by Ipas ASR in collaboration with Zambia’s Ministries of Health, Education, and Youth & Persons with Disability.
While the Zambian government has put in place strong policies and laws to protect children and support re-entry into school after dropping out, Ministry of Education HIV and Adolescent Health Officer Charity Banda revealed a critical gap:
“Children and the public have not been educated on these laws and policies to make informed decisions.”
She urged Ipas ASR and partners to intensify public awareness so that communities can act on existing protections.

Traditional leaders also raised alarm. Chief Chikaya Munyama of the Ila people from Itezhi Tezhi District called for more secondary schools to be constructed.
“In my chiefdom, the secondary school has no boarding school. Pupils are forced to become wives in the evening.”
He stressed that without enough schools and boarding facilities, teenagers especially girls remain vulnerable to early marriage and pregnancy.

The meeting brings together key stakeholders, including Chief Nyalugwe from Eastern Province and Chief Chikaza Munyama, to assess the “CTS nexus” using an 8-pillar ecosystem framework. The goalis to develop a scorecard and actionable solutions to break the cycle of child marriage, teenage pregnancy, and school dropouts in Zambia.
The message is clear: Good policies alone are not enough — awareness, access to schools, and community action must follow.

Ipas Africa Southern Region has called for a shift in attitudes and beliefs among service providers and communities to improve access to Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) services in Malawi.

Speaking during a stakeholder engagement at Mponela in Dowa District, IPAS Health Systems Advisor, Christopher Kandionamaso said many barriers to accessing services are not only structural but also rooted in personal values and societal norms that influence how care is delivered.

Kandionamaso added that there is a need to transform mindsets, beliefs, and attitudes among service providers so that services are delivered in a non-judgmental and inclusive manner.

On her part, Gender Officer for the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, Fiona Nguluwe, said the initiative will help the girl child to continue with her education, as the training content aligns with the school curriculum.

IPAS is implementing a Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation (VCAT) initiative in collaboration with partners such as Oxfam Malawi, with funding from the Government of Canada.
