Last week, we had the pleasure of hosting the 2nd edition of the Africa Dialogue Series, titled "Corporate South Africa in Africa." Delegates explored how South Africa’s trade and investment footprint across the continent is evolving, with a particular focus on the South Africa–Nigeria relationship.
The engaging discussion and diverse perspectives shared throughout the evening reinforced the importance of creating spaces for meaningful conversations about Africa’s future.

The Africa Dialogue Series provides a platform that brings together the business community, challenges perspectives, and enables quality networking. The two events to date have been characterised by thoughtful discussions, new connections and spirit of collaboration about trends affecting our continent.

Our sincere thanks to our distinguished speakers - Nigeria’s Consul General to South Africa, HE Amb. Nini Okey-Uche mni and Africa business experts Duncan Bonnett, Prof. Rutendo Hwindingwi and Dianna Games, for sharing their expertise and valuable insights. We also thank everyone who joined us in making the dialogue both engaging and impactful.

Yesterday, the The South Africa-Nigeria Business Chamber attended the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation Dialogue on "the Continent and Migration", where leaders from government, business, civil society, academia and the international community came together to discuss one of the continent's most pressing issues: managing migration in a way that supports economic growth, social cohesion and regional integration.

A consistent message throughout the discussions was that migration is not the root cause of South Africa's socio-economic challenges. Instead, speakers highlighted the need to tackle the underlying issues of unemployment, poor service delivery, weak governance and ineffective border management while recognising the important contribution that well-managed migration makes to economic growth.

Some of our key takeaways included:
- Effective and well-managed borders are essential, supported by the rule of law and stronger regional cooperation.
- The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) presents a significant opportunity to unlock greater intra-African trade and investment.
- Migration, when managed effectively, supports entrepreneurship, investment, skills transfer and access to new markets.
- South Africa's future prosperity is closely linked to Africa's success, reinforcing the need for regional solutions to regional challenges.
- Investing in education, skills development, and the employment of young people is critical to creating opportunities at home while ensuring that migration is a matter of choice rather than necessity.
- Strong governance, effective leadership and meaningful community engagement are fundamental to addressing the underlying drivers of migration and restoring public confidence.

As a Chamber whose main purpose is to strengthen business and investment between South Africa and Nigeria, these conversations resonate deeply with our mission. Economic growth, regional integration and the ease of doing business are built on partnership, dialogue and practical solutions. We are encouraged by the willingness of leaders from across sectors to engage on these issues and look forward to playing our part in advancing stronger commercial ties across the continent.

As the South Africa-Nigeria Business Chamber, we are pleased to hear President Cyril Ramaphosa's latest message on South Africa's digital future and the growing investment in the country's technology ecosystem. This renewed focus on digital advancement sets a promising tone for the region's economic growth.

Building on this momentum, the recent announcement by Google at their first African Cloud Summit, hosted in Johannesburg last week, marks a positive step for the continent through their ‘Building for Africa’ initiative. Investments in digital infrastructure, AI skills training, and innovation indicate growing confidence in Africa's digital economy and the opportunities it presents for businesses, entrepreneurs, and young people.

We are also encouraged by Mastercard's announcement of its new Africa Cybersecurity Centre of Excellence, which will be rolled out in phases, with South Africa and Nigeria as the first two countries. This reflects the strategic role both nations play in advancing digital transformation and driving innovation across the continent.

These developments present exciting opportunities for greater collaboration between South African and Nigerian businesses as we continue to build stronger digital economies and deepen trade and investment ties.

Last night’s Business Roundtable held in Johannesburg, created an important platform for open dialogue, collaboration and relationship-building between the South African and Nigerian business communities.

Hosted by the The South Africa-Nigeria Business Chamber in collaboration with the Consul General of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (Amb. Nini Okey-Uche mni) and the newly formed Group of Nigerian Professionals in Johannesburg, the event focused on renewed tensions between the two countries and the role that companies and entrepreneurs can play in addressing hostility, changing perceptions and developing sustainable solutions.

The evening brought together business leaders, professionals and stakeholders committed to strengthening cooperation and fostering meaningful engagement between our nations.
