Thank you to everyone joined our Town Hall Meeting yesterday, both in person and online. We appreciate you!

Sibongile Ndashe explains the campaign and why you should join African women's rights organisations, survivors, feminists and civil society outside the Pan-African Parliament to call for a pause in the ratification of the African Union Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (AU CEVAWG) [πŸ“’]

We are calling for the Convention to address important concerns from the people it will affect BEFORE ratification moves forward.

South Africa needs a National Council on Gender Based Violence and Femicide that is independent, accountable and capable of coordinating a meaningful national response to the GBVF crisis.

The Campaign invites you to the first conversation in our webinar series, where we critically examine the National Council on GBVF Act and explore why many civil society organisations believe it does not meet the promise of the National Strategic Plan on GBVF. Our speakers will unpack what the Act means in practice, where it falls short, and what is needed to ensure that South Africa's response to GBVF is effective, survivor centred and accountable.

How did we get here?

The campaign did not begin with a court case.

It began years ago.

It began when thousands of South Africans refused to accept Gender-Based Violence and Femicide as inevitable.

It began with the marches.

It continued through the 24 Demands, the Civil Society Declaration, the Presidential Summits, the National Strategic Plan on GBVF, years of consultations, parliamentary submissions and sustained advocacy.

Together, we called for a National Council on GBVF that could effectively coordinate South Africa's response to GBVF.

Today, we believe that the National Council on GBVF Act does not create a Council capable of fulfilling that purpose.

Over the coming weeks, we will take you through this journey.

We'll revisit the milestones that shaped the movement, the commitments that inspired hope, the concerns that were raised, and why we believe South Africa deserves a National Council on GBVF Act that is fit for purpose.

This is a conversation about accountability.

It is a conversation about the future of South Africa's response to GBVF.

Most importantly, it is a conversation about ensuring that the institutions we create are capable of delivering on the promises we made.

We asked for a National Council that can effectively coordinate South Africa's response to GBVF.

The National Council on GBVF Act is not fit for this purpose.

We are fighting for a National Council on GBVF Act that is fit for purpose.
