Volunteer With Us During the School Holidays

As we do every year, we will once again be running our soup kitchen programme throughout the school holidays. During this time, we provide meals to approximately 2,500 children, as well as adults and people experiencing homelessness, who rely on the support of our community.

The programme runs from 21 June to 20 July, and we are looking for volunteers to assist with cooking, serving, and distributing food. We are also always in need of support through donations, particularly bread, vegetables, and fruit, as fundraising remains one of our biggest challenges.

Unfortunately, as a non-profit organisation, we are unable to cover volunteers' transport, accommodation, or meals. These costs are for your own account. The Marico is approximately three hours from Johannesburg, but once you have spent time with us, you will become part of our family.

The communities we serve are among the poorest in the country. Many families live in informal settlements without access to basic services such as running water and electricity. Every donation of clothing, bedding, food, and other essentials makes a meaningful difference, and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity of those who support our work.

If you have a few days to spare and would like to make a real difference, we invite you to join us. This is an opportunity to give back, to learn, and to experience the power of community and compassion firsthand. It is something that will stay with you for life.

Families are welcome, and if your children need to complete community service hours, we can provide the necessary sign-off as a registered non-profit organisation.

While there is a cost involved for volunteers in terms of their own travel, accommodation, and meals, the rewards are immeasurable. This is an experience that uplifts not only those we serve but also those who come to help. Many of our volunteers return year after year because of the lasting impact it has on their lives.

Most importantly, this programme operates every school holiday to ensure that no child goes hungry when schools close. For many children, the meal they receive from our soup kitchen is their only hot meal of the day. Together, we can make sure that no child is left behind.

If you would like to volunteer, donate, or learn more, please get in touch. We would love to welcome you into our Marico family.

πŸ’› CAN YOU SPARE R67? πŸ’›

We need to raise R12 000 to keep the Groot Marico Soup Kitchen running and ensure that vulnerable children continue to receive nutritious meals.

For many of the children we serve, this may be the only meal they receive that day.

Just R67 can help put food on a child’s plate.

🐾 What an incredible morning at Pinnacle College Linden! 🐾

On Saturday morning, we were privileged to be invited by the Outreach Committee to facilitate a Dog Toy Making Event for the Grade 11 and 12 learners.

What a wonderful group of young people! Their kindness, enthusiasm, teamwork, and willingness to give back made the morning truly special. There was plenty of laughter, creativity, and fun as everyone worked together towards a common goal.

Together, the students made nearly 200 dog toys, which will be distributed to various SPCAs and dog shelters that have been identified as beneficiaries of this project. These toys will help bring enrichment, comfort, and joy to dogs waiting for their forever homes.

It was heartwarming to witness so many young people giving their time and energy to make a difference in the lives of animals in need. The spirit of community, compassion, and service was evident throughout the event.

A huge thank you to Pinnacle College Linden, the Outreach Committee, and every student who participated. You should be incredibly proud of what you achieved.

We look forward to hopefully being invited back again in the future! πŸ’™

πŸ’— 670 Worry Worms for Mandela Day – What a Wonderful Morning! πŸ’—

Today was nothing short of magical.

Students from Redhill school St Andrew’s and King David Linksfield came together to learn the craft of crocheting Worry Worms as part of our 670 Worry Worms for Mandela Day initiative.

The morning was filled with learning, laughter, friendship, creativity, and so much joy. Watching these incredible young people embrace a new skill while giving back to others was truly inspiring.

Not only did they learn how to make Worry Worms, but they have also committed to continuing at home and teaching their friends and families, helping us reach our goal of 670 handmade Worry Worms to spread kindness and comfort throughout our community.

A huge thank you to every student, parent, teacher and volunteer who made today possible. Your enthusiasm, compassion and willingness to give your time and talents remind us that small acts of kindness can make a very big difference.

We cannot wait to see all the Worry Worms that will be created over the coming weeks!
Learning a skill.
Making a difference.
Building community.
Spreading kindness one stitch at a time.

Thank you for helping us turn yarn into smiles and worries into hope.
