MARIKANA: 14 YEARS ON

On 16 August 2012, police shot and killed 34 striking mineworkers at Marikana. At least 78 others were injured, and approximately 250 were arrested.

Fourteen years later, their families and survivors are still waiting for truth, accountability and justice. No one has been successfully prosecuted for the events of 16 August.

Although civil settlements have been paid, compensation cannot replace criminal accountability, meaningful answers or a formal apology.

Marikana remains a painful reminder that environmental justice is inseparable from workers’ rights, human dignity and accountability for state and corporate power.

We remember the lives lost and stand in solidarity with their families, survivors, and everyone continuing the fight for justice.

From Protest to Power: Building Strategic Community-Based Organising ✊🏾

Effective activism is about more than raising our voices against injustice. It is about understanding where power sits, building collective strength and organising strategically for change.

At the Rights and Remedies Political Education School, activists explored how to:

🔎 Map power and decision-makers
🤝🏾 Identify allies and build strategic relationships
📍 Connect local struggles to national action
📚 Use political education to strengthen communities
✊🏾 Move from fragmented protest towards coordinated organising

The message was clear: know the terrain, understand the systems, build collective power and organise with strategy.

That's a wrap on the Environmental Justice Popular Education and Leadership Workshop!

Over the past few days, activists from across South Africa came together to learn, reflect, challenge ideas, and strengthen the collective power of our movement.

From unpacking political education, environmental racism, and systems of power, this workshop reminded us that change begins with informed, organised, and empowered communities.

A big thank you to every participant for sharing your knowledge, experiences, and commitment to advancing environmental justice.

Together, we are building a stronger environmental justice movement.

This morning, we are recapping on yesterday's discussions and asking some critical questions about the future of the environmental justice movement.

Together, we're reflecting on where the movement may be falling short in conscientising communities about issues such as spatial planning, environmental racism, and the systemic inequalities that continue to shape people's lived realities.

Building stronger movements starts with honest reflection, shared learning, and a commitment to doing better.

CER Political Education Workshop Day 2

Participants broke into groups to explore:

What is popular education?
Why is popular education important?
Do political education and popular education mean the same thing?

At the Environmental Justice Popular Education and Leadership Workshop, we are unpacking the root causes of environmental injustice—not just the symptoms.

From extractivism and imperialism to environmental racism, we're exploring and debunking how injustices of the past are affecting the current generation.
