What does it really cost a young person to show up for opportunity?

After a recent catch-up with two members of our 2025 YES Youth cohort placed at the Market Theatre, we were reminded of two things at once:

Holistic youth development works... but systemic barriers still shape how far young people can go.

Our latest reflection looks at the growth of Tsholo and Sagwadi, the role of financial literacy and personal development, and the hidden cost we are calling the “mobility tax” - the cost of simply getting to opportunity.

Read the full article on our website and join the conversation on how we collectively address the mobility tax:

Finding an opportunity is one thing. Being ready to apply for it is another.

Sometimes, the right opportunity appears before we feel prepared, and by the time we start updating our CV, looking for certificates, asking for references, or writing a motivation letter, the deadline is already close.

This week’s is about preparing before you need to.

Your CV, documents, email address, online profile and how you communicate all form part of the way you present yourself. That is why preparation is also part of personal branding.

Save this post, share it with someone who is applying for opportunities, and let us know what tools have helped you prepare.

Every business starts with an idea... but turning that idea into something real requires much more than inspiration. It requires curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, resilience, and the willingness to learn from others.

Over the past few weeks, participants in the Street Smart Upstarts programme have been doing exactly that.

Through our partnership with Phakamani Young Minds Academy - PYMA, young people have been exploring what it means to think like an entrepreneur, examining opportunities around them, testing assumptions, developing business concepts, and gaining a deeper understanding of what it takes to move from idea to implementation.

What has been particularly encouraging is seeing the level of engagement in the room. The questions being asked, the discussions taking place, and the ideas being shared all point to something important: entrepreneurship is not reserved for a select few. It is a skillset that can be learned, developed, and strengthened over time.

As South Africa continues to explore pathways towards greater economic inclusion, entrepreneurial development remains an important part of the conversation. Not only for the businesses that may emerge, but for the confidence, agency, and problem-solving capabilities that young people develop along the way.

A big thank you to Phakamani Young Minds Academy - PYMA for creating a space where young people can learn, explore, and begin shaping their futures.

We look forward to sharing more of this journey as the programme unfolds.

Youth Month is a reminder that young people do not only need encouragement, they also need access to practical tools, information and opportunities that can help them take their next step.

So we’re starting a short Youth Resource Guide series to share platforms, tools and organisations that young people can explore when preparing for work, learning, entrepreneurship and opportunity.

This week, we’re focusing on finding opportunities.

Whether you’re looking for a job, learnership, youth programme, short course, business support opportunity or a way to build experience, the first step is knowing where to look.

We’ve tagged a few platforms and organisations that young people may find useful:
SA Youth, Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, Youth Employment Service, National Youth Development Agency and EmpowaYouth.

This is not a complete list, but it is a starting point.

Save this post. Share it with a young person.
And if you know another useful platform, organisation or tool, tag them in the comments.

“Just get a job” sounds simple until you are the one applying, waiting, refreshing your inbox, and trying not to take every rejection personally.

The truth is, employment matters... but your worth cannot only be measured by whether you have a job right now.

Your skills, confidence, relationships, reputation and willingness to keep learning are also part of what you are building.

Our latest blog explores what it means to see yourself as more than your employment status, and why personal branding matters in a changing world of work.

We were told to “just get a job.”

But what happens when the job market is slow, the pressure is high, and your responsibilities cannot wait?

For many young people, unemployment can start to feel like a reflection of their worth. But your value is bigger than your employment status.

A job is important, but it is only one part of your story.

Our latest blog explores what it means to build your confidence, skills, relationships and personal brand while navigating a changing world of work.

Your personal brand is not only about how you look in-peron or online.

It is also about how you show up in the spaces you are part of.

How you communicate.
How you contribute.
How you respond to feedback.
How you carry yourself when opportunities are placed in front of you.

Through our My Personal Brand@Work course, currently being delivered to The Market Theatre Youth Employment Service youth cohort, we are creating space for young people to think about the kind of professional identity they are building.

Because in the workplace, personal branding can influence how people experience you, how they trust you, and how they remember you.

It can help you show up with more confidence, more intention, and a clearer understanding of the value you bring.

Your personal brand is already speaking. The question is: what is it saying?

What if skill is not always the first barrier?

Through our 6-year partnership with P.O.P. Art, one insight continues to stand out: young professionals do not only need work experience... they need the right conditions to build confidence, self-belief, and agency.

In creative industries, career pathways are rarely linear. Young people are often expected to navigate freelance opportunities, project-based work, client relationships, changing deadlines, and moments of uncertainty.

That is why real-world exposure matters.

Through the POPArt x Lucha Lunako partnership, young professionals are placed inside live business operations where they can learn by doing, contribute meaningfully, build networks, and develop the confidence to participate in the economy beyond a single job outcome.

This case study explores how funded placements, hands-on exposure, and structured capability building can create a more practical and scalable model for youth development.

Partner Spotlight: P.O.P. Art Centre 🎭

In industries where career paths are often non-linear, young professionals need more than a foot in the door. They need real-world exposure, supportive environments, and opportunities to build the confidence, networks, and capabilities that help them keep moving forward.

That is what makes our partnership with P.O.P. Art so meaningful.

As one of Lucha Lunako’s host-site partners, POPArt has created space for young professionals to learn within live business operations, from productions and partnerships to marketing, audience development, technical support, stage management, and administration.

Through this partnership, young people are not only gaining experience in the creative economy. They are learning how to navigate real clients, deadlines, delivery expectations, and the realities of building sustainable careers in a dynamic industry.

For POPArt, this partnership has also helped increase operational capacity while creating a flexible pipeline of emerging creative professionals who can continue contributing beyond the initial placement.

Our latest case study explores how the POPArt x Lucha Lunako partnership is building future-ready talent through funded placements, hands-on exposure, and structured capability building.
