HGA Foundation

HGA Foundation NPO providing education & skills development to aspiring farmers in Harry Gwala District, KZN, SA. Collaboration lies at the heart of our work.

Our mission at HGA (NPC ID: 2016/140997/08) is to support and guide aspiring farmers, providing them with the necessary skills and mentorship to thrive in the agricultural sector. We do not provide funding, but it is through our relationship-driven approach that we are able to advise, facilitate and skill passionate individuals who have the potential to make a meaningful contribution to the agricu

ltural industry. We engage with private sector partners, government agencies, and non-governmental institutions to garner support for our initiatives and ensure its success. Together, we create a network of opportunities to empower farmers to break the barriers of poverty and build prosperous futures. Together, we can make a difference that goes beyond the fields and touches the lives of every member in the Harry Gwala community and its surrounds. 🌱 Every HGA Learn student carries the potential to grow into a skilled agricultural leader - but financial pressure can make that journey much harder than it should be. πŸ’š

While students do receive a stipend during their practical training, many host farmers step in to cover additional costs themselves so students can continue learning and gaining valuable hands-on experience πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

By supporting our student stipend fund, you help ease that burden and ensure future farmers are able to stay focused, supported and on the path to graduation 🌾

🚜 Farming progress doesn’t happen overnight - it grows through guidance, learning and the willingness to keep improving.

With mentorship from commercial farmer Rob Stapylton-Smith, Ducky Ngcobo has steadily transformed Summerhill Farm into a productive dairy operation. πŸ’ͺ What began with limited formal schooling has evolved into a farm with stronger systems, better practices and increased milk production.

From installing a swing-over dairy system to refining his overall approach to farming, Ducky’s journey shows how mentorship and opportunity can unlock real potential in agriculture 🌿

🌱 Supporting a future farmer takes more than determination - it also takes a community willing to invest in their journey.
Through HGA Learn, host farmers open their farms and share their knowledge with students gaining hands-on experience. While students receive a stipend, many of these farmers still carry part of the financial responsibility themselves.
We’re working to raise student stipends to R5 400 per month so that students are better supported and the farmers mentoring them can continue focusing on what matters most - teaching the next generation of agricultural leaders πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ
Your support helps keep these opportunities growing. πŸ’š

Real growth in agriculture happens out in the fields, where knowledge meets experience 🌱

After earning his National Diploma in Farm Management, Siphiwo Nguse joined HGA Learn and trained at an avocado farm near Highflats. Through hard work and hands-on learning, Siphiwo is now a foreman on that very same farm πŸ₯‘πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ

Stories like his show the difference practical training can make! πŸ’š Let’s help more future farmers take the next step: https://2ly.link/1y2Q1

At our Centocow site, the HGA Grow plot continues to produce strong yields, with students actively contributing while building practical skills. Our team has also been working alongside farmers in Hlabeni - supporting irrigation improvements, sharing knowledge on plant spacing and conducting soil analysis to strengthen future harvests 🌱

On the HGA Learn side, we’re proud to have reached the milestone of placing our 150th student, with more placements already underway. Each opportunity helps equip young people with the experience and confidence needed to grow in the agricultural sector πŸ‘

🌱 Access to safe, well-prepared land can make all the difference for small-scale and subsistence farmers. Yet without proper fencing and infrastructure, growing food consistently becomes a real challenge.

Through HGA Grow, we’re creating community gardens where farmers can cultivate crops, share knowledge, and strengthen food security together πŸ₯•πŸ₯¦πŸ₯”

πŸ’š A donation of R500 helps move us closer to fencing a 0.5–1ha garden β€” - creating a protected space where farmers can grow with confidence and support their communities.

On Freedom Day, we reflect on the power of opportunity and the importance of building a future where every South African has the chance to grow and succeed πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦πŸŒ±

At Harry Gwala Agri, we believe that strengthening food security and providing practical agricultural training helps communities move closer to lasting independence and dignity.

Every garden planted and every skill learned is a step toward a more resilient future.

Early mornings and long days in the field are part of the journey for HGA Learn students 🌱

As they build real, hands-on farming skills alongside experienced farmers, the right workwear helps them stay safe, comfortable and focused on learning. Yet for many students, essential gear is simply out of reach.

That’s why we’re raising support to provide each HGA Learn student with the workwear they need to keep showing up, learning confidently, and growing their future in agriculture πŸ’ͺ
πŸ’š R1 300 equips one student with essential workwear – a practical investment that supports them throughout their training.

πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ When passion meets the right support, meaningful change follows.

After completing HGA Learn in 2021, Zikhona Bhantshi partnered with Athayanda Mdanyana to build ANZ Greenfields PTY LTD into a successful 5-hectare cash crop farm near Bizana πŸ₯¬ What began as an opportunity to learn has grown into a business that sustains livelihoods and creates opportunity for others.

Today, they’re not only producing quality crops, but also mentoring students from Esayidi College – sharing their knowledge and helping shape a stronger future for agriculture in their community πŸ™ŒπŸŒ±
