A morning of reflection, connection and shared purpose at Hilton Bush Lodge. 🌿💚

Our 2026 AGM gave us the opportunity to look back on HGA’s journey, reflect on the work underway and look ahead to what comes next.

Throughout the morning, we heard from HGA Chairperson Rob Stapylton-Smith, Vice-Chairman Rory Bryden, Rentia Vermaak of Colenbrander and HGA Programme Manager Dylan Weyer, with author, actor and playwright John van der Ruit joining us as our guest speaker. 📚

Each contribution formed part of a bigger picture - HGA’s continued commitment to developing agricultural skills, creating practical learning opportunities and supporting small-scale and subsistence farmers through HGA Learn and HGA Grow. 🌱

Thank you to everyone who shared the morning with us and continues to play a part in the work of HGA. 💚

Storytelling, fresh perspectives and meaningful conversations all have a place in bringing a community together. 📚🌿

South African author, actor and playwright John van der Ruit joins the HGA Foundation AGM as our guest speaker, sharing his perspective with the people, partners and supporters behind HGA’s work.

John is already a familiar face within the HGA community, having previously joined us at our Literary Ladies Brunch. His presence at today’s AGM adds a different voice to a morning focused on reflecting on HGA, its programmes and the community of support that makes our work possible.

It’s a beautiful day at Hilton Bush Lodge as we gather for the HGA Foundation Annual General Meeting. 🌿☀️

This morning brings together the people who support and contribute to HGA’s work - strengthening food security and rural livelihoods through agricultural skills development, practical training and support for small-scale and subsistence farmers.

As we reflect on the organisation and hear from our speakers, we’re looking forward to a meaningful morning together - and to sharing a few moments from the day with you. 💚

🌱 For Olwethu Sosibo, a passion for agriculture started right at home in Bulwer, where farming plays an important role in the local community.

After completing his N6 in Farming Management at Lovedale TVET College, Olwethu gained 18 months of hands-on experiential learning at Alsace Farm, a dairy farm under Stapylton-Smith Farming. 🐄🌾

Now, he’s looking for an opportunity on a dairy or beef farm where he can continue growing professionally and personally while contributing his skills to the farm.

👨‍🌾 Practical agricultural training means getting out into the field and learning by doing.
For HGA Learn students, having proper workwear helps them stay safe, confident and focused while gaining the hands-on experience they need. 🌱

🌱 Meet HGA graduate Thembelani Mbili, an agricultural professional from Durban, KZN, with a passion for learning, practical farming and helping others succeed.

With an N6 qualification in Farming Management, Thembelani completed 18 months of practical learning at Olivar Dairy Farm, where he gained hands-on experience in milking, assisting with hoof care and helping repair farm machinery in the workshop. 👨‍🌾🚜

Looking ahead, Thembelani hopes to use his agricultural knowledge to support farmers and emerging farmers through consultancy work - combining his love of agriculture with his drive to help others grow. 💚

🌱 Meet HGA graduate Thembisile Mhlongo, a young agricultural professional from Donnybrook, KZN, with a passion for poultry and dairy production.

After completing her Diploma in Farming Management, Thembisile gained hands-on experience in broiler production during her in-service training at Beauvallet Poultry Farm. Her journey has also included experience with layers, working as a meat quality controller at Riversmead Poultry Farm, and spending a year in the United States with the World Wise Foundation, where she participated in day-to-day farm duties. 👩‍🌾🌍

With experience across different areas of agriculture and a strong interest in continuing to grow her skills, Thembisile’s journey reflects the value of practical learning and exposure in building a future in farming. 💚
