🚁 The future of farming is evolving, and so are the opportunities for our students.

Through HGA Learn, we aim to expose students to a wide range of agricultural practices that complement their hands-on training. Recently, two HGA Grow students visited the Kidger's farm near Creighton to observe Smart Farming Technology in action, including the use of a drone for crop spraying.

Experiences like these broaden their understanding of modern agriculture and help prepare them for an industry that continues to embrace innovation.

🌱 Behind every graduate is a journey of growth, determination and hands-on learning.

For Nomusa Bhengu, practical experience gained through HGA's in-service training programme helped build the confidence and skills she needed to take the next step in her agricultural career. Today, she's not only pursuing opportunities in the sector but also giving back by volunteering with the One School One Garden programme to help strengthen food security in her community.

Stories like Nomusa's show the lasting impact that opportunity, mentorship and practical training can have on the future of agriculture.

Through HGA Grow, our demonstration plots at Centocow and Hlabeni show what’s possible when practical farming knowledge is shared using resources that are already available within rural communities.

By comparing different growing methods and demonstrating organic practices such as kraal manure and mulching, these plots give local farmers the opportunity to see sustainable techniques in action. At Hlabeni, the demonstration has also shown how effective mulching can be in helping crops flourish, even when watering and weeding are limited.

Every demonstration plot is an opportunity to share knowledge, strengthen skills, and help build more food-secure communities.

The One Home One Garden Co-op, led by Nigel Dennis, is a powerful example of what can be achieved when small-scale farmers work side by side. 💚 Through collaboration, skills sharing and mutual support, this 22-member organic farming network continues to strengthen livelihoods and supply fresh produce to local retailers in Highflats 🥬🌶️

Their journey shows how collective effort can create lasting impact - and with continued support, even more opportunities can take root for farmers and their communities. 🙌

🌱 Every successful HGA Learn student benefits from more than practical training – they benefit from the dedication of farmers who open their farms and share their expertise with the next generation.

Although HGA provides students with a stipend, many host farmers carry additional costs to ensure meaningful, hands-on learning continues throughout the programme 👨‍🌾💚

That’s why we’re working to increase student stipends to R5 400 per month. This will provide greater support for students while helping to reduce the financial pressure on the farmers who mentor them.

🌱 Every season brings new opportunities to grow, learn and strengthen our farming communities.

Our Second Quarter 2026 Newsletter shares some of the work taking place across HGA Grow and HGA Learn - from demonstration gardens that showcase practical, sustainable food production methods, to students gaining exposure to new agricultural technologies and the continued support of the partners who make this work possible. The newsletter also celebrates the generosity of our supporters and shares an exciting new chapter as Harry Gwala Agri begins operating as the HGA Foundation.
