facilitated Workshops 6 and 7 of the Stellar Home Language programme in the Northern Cape as part of the NCDOE & Wordworks Grade R Home Language Project.

Teachers worked through small group literacy activities using puzzles, card games, and story based learning materials, experiencing the activities as learners would in the classroom.

The sessions created space for teachers to observe how structured play supports participation, focus, sound recognition, and early literacy development in a practical and engaging way.

Learner drawing activities from the Wordworks’ Teacher Akinyi storybook also reflected how children are responding to and engaging with the materials in meaningful ways.

Across both workshops, teachers continued building confidence in using Stellar Home Language materials to support guided learning in their classrooms.

Wordworks delivers Stellar Training of Trainers workshop in the Northern Cape.

From 28 to 29 April 2026, Wordworks brought together Subject Advisors from the Northern Cape Department of Education in Kimberley for a two‑day Stellar Home Language Training of Trainers workshop.

The workshop formed part of an ongoing Training of Trainers cycle within the NCDOE DGMT Stellar Home Language Grade R Programme, running from July 2025 to June 2026, with phased training, mentoring, classroom support, and implementation activities across the John Taolo Gaetswe district.

Thirteen officials took part in the sessions, exploring how to support and train Grade R teachers across their respective education districts. The focus throughout the workshop was on strengthening early language development and deepening understanding of how foundational literacy practices could be supported in classrooms.

As the two days unfolded, discussions moved between programme content, classroom realities, and the role of language in early learning. Participants engaged actively, sharing experiences from their districts and reflecting on how the training could be applied in practice.

There was also a strong focus on the role of support systems beyond the classroom, particularly how parental involvement contributed to building stronger literacy foundations for young learners. “It’s encouraging to see teachers bringing the Stellar programme to life in their classrooms with such enthusiasm,” said Ntsiki Ntusikazi, Wordworks Project Lead.

By the end of the workshop, participants had a clearer sense of how to take the Stellar Home Language programme forward within their districts and how to support teachers in strengthening early literacy teaching in meaningful and practical ways.

The Stellar Home Language classroom programme (Grade R) is an early literacy programme for Grade R teachers working with 5–6‑year‑old children. It is designed to strengthen early language learning and emergent literacy in Grade R classrooms.
