FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - STATEMENT FROM THE KRUGER SAFARI AND TOURISM ASSOCIATION

The Executive Committee and members of the Kruger Safari and Tourism Association (KSTA) have noted with disappointment the video footage and photographs currently circulating on social media regarding an incident involving a safari vehicle at a lion sighting within the Southern region of the Kruger National Park.

Based on the material that has been shared publicly, the conduct depicted appears to be inconsistent with the professional standards, responsible guiding practices, and respect for park regulations that should guide all tourism operators working within a protected area such as the Kruger National Park.

KSTA wishes to state categorically that the company, operator, and guide associated with the incident are not members of the Kruger Safari and Tourism Association.

Our association remains committed to promoting responsible tourism, ethical wildlife viewing, professional conduct, and respect for the rules and regulations that protect the Kruger National Park, its wildlife, its visitors, and the reputation of the tourism industry as a whole.

We recognise that incidents of this nature may cause understandable concern and frustration. However, we respectfully request that comments on this post remain constructive and respectful. KSTA does not support derogatory, inflammatory, or unbecoming remarks directed at any individual or organisation. Our intention is not to contribute to negativity, but rather to reaffirm the standards and values that our members are expected to uphold.

We encourage the public to continue supporting responsible tourism operators who place professionalism, ethical conduct, and the protection of the Kruger National Park at the heart of their work.

MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday, May 12, 2026, Reckless 1 of / 1
SANParks SEARCHING FOR AN INDIVIDUAL WHO DISRESPECTS PARK RULES THROUGH RECKLESS CONDUCT
A disturbing social media footage depicting an individual engaging in dangerous, reckless, and unlawful conduct within the Kruger National Park (KNP) - a protected area under SANParks management has surfaced and noted with great concerned and disappointment.
The footage shows the individual crossing rivers unlawfully, driving on roads that were officially closed, and operating a motor vehicle recklessly within a national park environment. Such behaviour demonstrates a blatant disregard for conservation regulations, public safety, environmental protection measures, and the authority of park management.
The organisation wishes to make it plainly clear that conduct of this nature will not be tolerated and will be dealt with the seriousness it deserves.
Protected areas are governed by strict environmental legislation, including the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act (NEMPAA), which prohibit activities that may endanger biodiversity, damage ecosystems, threaten public safety, or undermine the integrity of conservation areas. Non-compliance with these provisions constitutes a serious offence and may result in criminal prosecution, substantial fines, imprisonment, civil liability for damages caused, and administrative sanctions.
Driving through rivers, disregarding road closures, and reckless driving in protected areas not only place the lives of the individuals involved at risk, but also endanger wildlife, damage sensitive ecosystems, and compromise infrastructure and visitor safety. Road closures are implemented for specific operational, environmental, and safety reasons, particularly during periods of flooding, poor road conditions, or wildlife movement.
SANParks confirms that efforts are currently underway to trace and identify the individual responsible for these actions. Once identified, the individual will face the full consequences of the law, including the imposition of fines and the withdrawal of access privileges to all protected areas managed by SANParks. We are looking for this individual, and he will face the music.
Members of the public with information that may assist in identifying the individual are encouraged to contact SANParks through its official communication channels or the nearest law enforcement authority.
SANParks can also confirm that gate officials seen on the video encouraging and supporting the behaviour will also face consequences for their irresponsible actions which are contrary to parks rules and staff conduct.
