Stella Cockburn and I have had 4 jam packed days in Hermannsburg, Germany The familiarity and intensity of this place is profound. Summer is a magnificent season to experience the Lüneburger Heide - Heath. It’s greener than green, dotted with colourful flowers, blue skies and very hot loooong days. We landed in Hannover on Thursday evening and started our journey at the birth place of Ludwig Harms in Waldsrode. The Schulze family were wonderful chauffeurs and hosts. We checked into our lovely hotel, the original Ludwig Harms Mission House, after a 34 hour journey from Hermannsburg SA to Hermannsburg DE. Our first meeting was with the mayor of Hermannsburg. Ms Katharina Eberling received us graciously. We were accompanied by Ms Alexandra Wenck who has arranged wonderful opportunities for us. We saw the Tiefental where Ludwig preached to thousands 177 years ago. We met up with the first old scholars on Friday evening in a local Biergarten and have had an incredible fruitful and fun old scholar/alumni reunion yesterday and today. On this 21 June 2026, the longest day of the year I’m deeply grateful to be in the place of my ancestors. I feel so blessed and am in awe of its history and beauty.
