🚨🐾 PARVO IS ON THE RISE AGAIN! 🐾🚨

Please, please make sure your dogs and puppies are vaccinated against PARVO. 💉❤️
Parvo is highly contagious and can be devastating, especially for young puppies.
🐶 DID YOU KNOW?
There is a vaccine called DP Plus that can be given to puppies from around 4 weeks of age in situations where early protection is needed. It is designed to provide protection against distemper and parvovirus, and according to the manufacturer, immunity develops rapidly — around 3 days after vaccination.
⚠️ BUT PLEASE SPEAK TO YOUR VET FIRST. DP Plus is not a replacement for the puppy's normal vaccination programme. Your vet will advise you on the correct vaccination schedule and when the puppy needs its follow-up vaccinations.
🦠 AND HERE'S THE SCARY PART ABOUT PARVO...
Parvo doesn't just disappear when an infected dog leaves your property.
The virus is extremely hardy and can remain in contaminated soil and environments for months, and potentially much longer under suitable conditions. It can be carried around on shoes, clothing, hands, food bowls, kennels and other objects.
That means you can unknowingly bring parvo into your yard — even if your own dogs never had direct contact with an infected animal.
🚫 If you have had a dog with parvo, DO NOT bring an unvaccinated puppy into that environment without speaking to your vet first. Ordinary household cleaning products are not necessarily effective against parvo, and proper disinfection is essential.
❤️ PLEASE DON'T WAIT UNTIL YOUR PUPPY IS SICK.
Vaccination is one of the most important things you can do to protect your animals.
If you have a puppy, speak to your vet about DP Plus and the correct vaccination programme for your puppy.

🐾 WHY REHOME THROUGH AN ANIMAL WELFARE ORGANISATION — NOT PRIVATELY 🐾
When you are looking for a new home for an animal, please think twice before simply giving them away privately. ❤️
There is so much more to responsible rehoming than finding someone who says, “I’ll take them.”
At Sentiara, we make sure that:
🏠 Home checks are done to make sure the environment is suitable and safe.
📋 An adoption contract is signed — this helps protect the animal and ensures they cannot simply be given away, sold or passed on to someone else without our knowledge.
❤️ We follow up after adoption to check that the animal has settled in and is being properly cared for.
✂️ We ensure animals are sterilised, helping prevent unwanted litters and reducing the number of animals ending up in shelters or on the streets.
🐾 And if a problem does arise, we are there to help.
Recently, we helped with a heartbreaking case where the owners had passed away. Because we were involved, we could ensure that all the animals were safely rehomed and sterilised.
This is why responsible rehoming matters.
A photo on Facebook and a private message saying “I want the dog” is not enough. We need to know where that animal is going, who they are going to, and what happens to them afterwards.
🙏 Please don't rehome animals privately. Contact an animal welfare organisation and allow us to help you find the safest and most responsible solution.
Because finding a home is only the beginning.
Making sure it is a FOREVER home is what matters. 🐾❤️

⚠️🐾 EXTREME WEATHER WARNING – PLEASE KEEP YOUR ANIMALS SAFE! 🐾⚠️
The Garden Route and parts of the Western Cape are facing cold, wet and very windy conditions, with heavy rain and possible flooding. Please don't forget the animals who depend on us. ❤️
Here are some simple but lifesaving tips:
🏠 Bring pets indoors where possible. No animal should be left exposed to freezing rain, wind or storms.
🛖 If an animal must stay outside, make sure they have a dry, waterproof and windproof shelter, raised off the wet ground.
🧺 Provide clean, dry bedding and replace it immediately if it becomes wet.
🍲 Make sure they have enough food and fresh water, placed somewhere protected from the rain.
🔗 Never leave animals chained or tied outside during severe weather.
🌊 Move animals to higher ground if there is any risk of flooding. Never leave them in areas where rising water can trap them.
🚪 Check gates and fences — strong winds and flooding can cause animals to escape.
⚡ During thunderstorms, keep pets inside and away from windows where possible. Make sure frightened animals cannot bolt through an open gate or door.
🐕‍🦺 Older, sick, very young and short-haired animals need extra protection from the cold.
📦 Have an emergency bag ready with food, water, medication, blankets, leads/collars and important veterinary information.

❤️ Please look beyond your own front door. Check on the animals of elderly neighbours, people who may struggle to care for their animals, and animals you know are being kept outside.
If you wouldn't want to spend the night outside in these conditions, neither would your animal.
Let's keep them SAFE, DRY and WARM. 🐾❤️
SENTIARA
Through Education, we build a Kinder tomorrow for all animals.
Together, we make a difference. 🐾
The current Western Cape warning includes disruptive rainfall in the Garden Route, with damaging winds also expected in parts of the region.

🐾❤️ SNOOPY NEEDS OUR HELP ❤️🐾
Snoopy was adopted by us recently and went off to his new home, where he found a wonderful mom and dad. We were so happy that he had found his family. ❤️
Unfortunately, just a few weeks later, Snoopy became seriously ill.
His new mom and dad didn’t hesitate. They rushed him to the vet, where it was discovered that something was attacking his red blood cells. Snoopy became so ill that he even needed blood transfusions. 💔
Long story short… R6,500 later, Snoopy is doing better, but we still don’t know exactly what is going on, and further veterinary care may be needed.
When we adopt animals out, our adoption terms make it clear that we cannot be held responsible for illnesses or medical conditions that may develop after adoption.
But that doesn’t mean we can simply turn our backs.
Snoopy’s new mom and dad adopted him because they wanted to give him a loving home. They certainly never expected to face a R6,500 veterinary bill only weeks after bringing him home, and they had not budgeted for anything like this.
But when Snoopy needed them, they did everything they could to save him. ❤️
Now we would like to try and help them.
🙏 If anyone can contribute towards Snoopy’s veterinary costs, no matter how small the donation, we would be incredibly grateful.
Any donations received with the reference SNOOPY will be used directly towards helping with his medical expenses.

🐾❤️ STAR’S UPDATE — AND WHY THIS MATTERS ❤️🐾

This morning I collected Star, the dog who was being kept in a hok, and I can say that she is warm, safe and at the PDSA. 🥹❤️
Star has been booked in for her sterilisation, and this gives us something incredibly important — TIME.
Time for her owner to fix the yard.
Time to break down the hok.
Time to build a proper kennel.
Time to learn what Star needs to live a better life.
And that is exactly what we are working towards.
A lot of people see a dog in bad conditions and immediately say, “Take the dog away.”
I completely understand that reaction. I have been in animal welfare for 23 years, and I have seen heartbreaking situations that make you want to remove an animal immediately.
But here is the uncomfortable truth:

Removing the animal doesn't always solve the problem.
If we simply take Star away, what happens tomorrow?
The owner may get another dog.
And that dog could end up in exactly the same hok.
Then another dog.
And another.
We haven't solved the problem. We've simply moved one animal out of the situation and opened the door for another animal to take its place.
And every animal entering an already overwhelmed welfare system adds pressure to a system that is already struggling with limited space, limited resources and, sadly, euthanasia.
That is why education matters.
That is why intervention matters.
That is why working with owners matters.
Sometimes the answer isn't just taking the animal away.
Sometimes the answer is changing the environment, educating the owner and preventing the next animal from suffering.
Star is safe today. ❤️
Now let's make sure that when she goes home, she goes home to a completely different life.
This is animal welfare too.
Not just rescuing the animal in front of us — but breaking the cycle so another animal doesn't become the next Star. 🐾❤️
