Who is listening to the child whose life we are planning?

At the Provincial Capacity-Building Programme on the National Strategy to Accelerate Action for Children, Jika Uluntu presented “The Child Whose Life We Are Planning” through our Voices of Ubuntu programme.

The performance placed an invisible child at the centre of the stage—represented by an empty chair and a school bag—while the institutions and adults responsible for the child discussed plans, programmes, pressures and responsibilities around them.

The production asks an uncomfortable but necessary question: while families, government departments, schools, health services and civil-society organisations are all trying to help, is the child’s own voice still being lost between fragmented systems, limited resources and competing mandates?

Through Voices of Ubuntu, we use culturally grounded theatre and facilitated dialogue to help institutions move beyond policy language and examine how systems are experienced by children in real life.

The performance may end, but the question must remain:
Did anyone ask the child?

Jika Uluntu NPC, through Voices of Ubuntu, is honoured to contribute to the Day of the African Child programme under the theme ‘No More Harm: Advancing Children’s Rights to Protection and Dignity in Africa.’ Our Forum Theatre piece, No Child Stands Alone, uses story, stage and dialogue to amplify children’s voices and strengthen community-led child protection.

Voices of ubuntu: Healing communities through courage, dialogue and storytelling.

Over two days in East London, community leaders, researchers, government departments, NGOs and traditional leaders came together to unpack the growing youth drug crisis in rural communities.

Through dialogue, indigenous knowledge, lived experiences and collective reflection, Healing Across Homelands created space for healing, learning and action. This is only the beginning.

The workshop focused on indigenous healing approaches, rural youth addiction, community dynamics, trauma, GBV, and collaborative action strategies.
