Guided by the Jewish values of tikkun olam, tzedakah and compassion towards the stranger, the KZN South African Jewish Board of Deputies partnered with HIAS South Africa to launch an emergency food relief appeal for refugees and asylum seeker families affected by the recent outbreak of xenophobic violence and intimidation in the province. Through the refugee-led organization Afrika AWAKE, we handed over 120 food parcels with the funds raised from the Jewish community.

32 years into democracy, the resurgence of xenophobic violence in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng is a painful reminder of our past.

As the Jewish community, we know the cost of discrimination and the power of standing together. We did it in 2008, and we must do it again.
