Lutsha Development Organization extends its deepest and most heartfelt appreciation to former Health MEC Maruping Lekwene for believing in this vision and recognising the urgent need to create spaces where men are encouraged to speak, reflect, and prioritise their mental well-being. Your support affirms that the conversations around men’s mental health are not only necessary, but transformative in shaping the kind of society we all aspire to build.

We are sincerely grateful to the Northern Cape Department of Health for sponsoring and backing this programme. Your commitment ensured that this initiative was not just an idea, but a lived and impactful experience that reached young men where it matters most.

A special word of appreciation goes to Richie Cloete Consultancy for facilitating with such depth, care, and professionalism. The safe spaces you created allowed for honest, sometimes difficult, but necessary conversations that will continue to echo in the lives of these young men long after the programme has ended.

We also extend our gratitude to Hoërskool Okiep and Nababeep Hoërskool as well as the young men from Conservation South Africa, whose participation, openness, and courage to engage made this programme meaningful and impactful. Your willingness to show up, to listen, and to share is what truly brought this initiative to life.

To HOTT Company, Richard Theron and Rose Giko, thank you for the nourishing meals and refreshments that sustained both body and spirit throughout the programme - your contribution did not go unnoticed.

This is not the end, but the beginning of a much-needed shift. A shift away from the belief that men must always be strong in silence, towards a reality where vulnerability is embraced, emotions are expressed, and burdens are shared. True strength lies in honesty, in healing, and in standing together to break generational cycles.

Day 3, April 19, brought everything full circle - a moment of calm reflection and honest conversation atop the hill at Goegap Nature Reserve. Through meditation and open dialogue, the true purpose of the programme was reaffirmed: healing, growth, and a renewed sense of self.

Day 2 concluded on a powerful and symbolic note facilitated Richard Theron - an evening of release, reflection, and renewal. Gathered around the fire, participants were given a safe and supportive space to unburden themselves, letting go of the negative thoughts, emotional weight, and silent struggles they have carried for far too long.

In the warmth of the flames, stories were shared, fears were voiced, and vulnerabilities were met with understanding rather than judgment. It became a moment of collective healing - where each individual was reminded that they are not alone in their battles. The act of “offloading” was not just about speaking, but about consciously choosing to release what no longer serves them.

As the fire burned, so did a renewed sense of hope. Positivity, courage, and a fresh perspective were ignited within each young man - a reminder that even in darkness, there is light, and within every challenge lies the potential for growth.

This closing moment was more than an activity - it was a turning point. A step toward lighter minds, stronger hearts, and a more intentional way of living.

Day 2 of the men’s mental health programme continued with a deeply reflective group dialogue centred on the role of family, community, friendships, social environments, schools, and associations in shaping the identity and lived experiences of a man navigating life independently. The session, facilitated by Deidre Van Rooyen from Richie Cloete Consultancy, created a structured yet open space for participants to engage in honest and meaningful conversation.

Men were encouraged to go beyond surface-level discussion and critically reflect on how their upbringing, surroundings, and social expectations influence the way they see themselves and how they are expected to behave in society.

Participants openly shared personal experiences, highlighting emotional burdens, unspoken struggles, and the often silent pressures carried in different life contexts. The session emphasised the importance of safe, non-judgemental spaces where men can speak freely, reflect deeply, and begin to offload emotional weight in constructive ways.

Day 2, April 18, shifted the focus inward - creating space to reconnect with self, nature, and purpose. The morning began with a refreshing 5km hike through the breathtaking Goegap Nature Reserve, where participants were encouraged to walk in silence, reflect deeply, and engage in honest conversations with their own thoughts. Surrounded by nature, it became more than just a hike - it was a moment of grounding, clarity, and mental reset.

The day continued with a powerful circle conversation facilitated by Richie Cloete, unpacking what it truly means to be a man in today’s society. Young men courageously engaged on topics such as societal expectations, emotional suppression, and the pressures to conform to rigid definitions of masculinity. The dialogue also challenged harmful stereotypes, including those directed at the LGBTQIA+ community, encouraging understanding, respect, and the dismantling of stigma.

These conversations opened doors to vulnerability, accountability, and growth - equipping participants to navigate life beyond labels and limitations. It was a reminder that strength lies not in silence, but in honesty, empathy, and the courage to redefine what manhood looks like.

Mental health is not a luxury - it is a foundation. Without it, carrying the weight of life’s responsibilities becomes overwhelming, especially for young people navigating an increasingly complex world.

The Lutsha Development Organization, in partnership with Richie Cloete Consultancy and proudly supported by the Northern Cape Department of Health (Office of the MEC), hosted a 3-day powerful Mental Health Programme at Goegap Nature Reserve park, 17-19 April dedicated to young men. This initiative created a safe and engaging space for honest dialogue, growth, and self-reflection.

Day 1, April 17, set the tone with meaningful introductions and thought-provoking conversations centered on the digital age we live in. As part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, young men explored how technology, social media, and constant connectivity are shaping their identities, mental well-being, and daily realities. These discussions unpacked both the opportunities and the pressures that come with this fast-evolving digital landscape.

This is more than a programme - it’s a movement to equip young men with the awareness, tools, and resilience needed to face life with strength and purpose.
