In the quiet, sun-swept town of De Aar in South Africaβs Northern Cape, life has never been without its challenges. For many families here, the struggle to find enough food and stable work is a daily reality. Yet, in the midst of hardship, a group of young women saw not just the problems but the potential.
In 2021, they began working together to help their community in any way they could. By May 2023, their passion and commitment took shape as Waters Care Center, a registered non-profit organisation dedicated to uplifting the poor, vulnerable, and unemployed - with a special focus on empowering youth.
The centreβs flagship initiative, the Food Security Programme, tackles two urgent needs at once: hunger and unemployment. It does more than feed people-it equips them with the skills to feed themselves for a lifetime. Through hands-on training in agriculture and entrepreneurship, community members learn how to grow their own crops, manage small-scale farming projects, and turn produce into income.
For many local youth without formal qualifications, this programme offers a rare opportunity to gain practical, employable skills. They leave with the knowledge to work in agriculture or start their own small businesses. And the benefits ripple outward-healthier meals on family tables, reduced reliance on aid, and new sources of local economic activity.
The impact has been clear. Fresh, nutritious food now reaches households that once had little to none. Job opportunities, once scarce, are opening. A sense of possibility is returning to a community that had long been defined by its struggles.
None of this progress has happened in isolation. The Sibona Ilanga Trust has played a key role in helping Waters Care Centre move toward a self-sustaining future. With their support, the organisation is expanding its greenhouse for year-round vegetable production and developing aquaculture systems to farm fish. These initiatives are designed not only to provide food but also to generate income that will keep the programme running for years to come.
Waters Care Centreβs story is one of resilience, resourcefulness, and renewal. It is proof that with the right tools, people can change their own lives - and, in doing so, transform the life of an entire community.
In De Aar, hope isnβt just an idea. Itβs growing - in the soil, in the skills of young hands, and in the determination of a community ready to thrive.
