We are proud to introduce new committee members, Lynne and Alan Routledge.
Thank you both for volunteering your time!

Lynne is a Cape Town-based artist with a lifelong passion for art history, holding a BA degree from Wits University. After studying Jewellery Design at the Ruth Prowse Art College, she successfully managed the business Silvercraft, specialising in antique restoration and jewellery manufacturing.
Over the past decade, Lynne transitioned into fine art. Initially working with oils, she has recently pivoted to acrylics and mixed media. Heavily inspired by the Impressionists, her work explores mystical, symbolic colour palettes designed to evoke a sense of profound tranquility.

Alan was born and raised in the industrial north-east corner of North Yorkshire, where early exposure to the natural beauty of the Moors and the Yorkshire Dales fostered a deep appreciation for the outdoors and local wildlife. During his school years, he relied on high marks in Art to boost his academic performance, and although he considered pursuing art school, he ultimately embarked on a career in the Chemical Industry which brought him to Cape Town.
After taking early retirement and marrying Lynne, Alan pursued interests in photography, game/bird-watching, but did not initially return to art. This changed when Lynne encouraged him to join an evening art course, which reignited his
passion for painting.

His artistic focus has evolved towards animal subjects, painting both his own pets and commissioned works of others' pets as well as wild animals. He also enjoys painting architectural subjects, likely influenced by his engineering background, and practices graphite drawing for its detail and realism.
Although his journey as an artist has been relatively short, Alan finds deep satisfaction in the immersive experience of painting and sense of fulfilment to support CAS.

Tuesday we had a great evening with
Beth shared stories about her plein air paintings and showed us her set up- which she has made as sturdy as possible to manage the Cape Town weather! She said that when she started painting she felt like she needed to work from life. She is also an avid sketcher and always has two sketch books with her wherever she goes.
“It’s a wonderful record of your life- you can look through the sketchbooks and relive those moments. It’s such a good reminder of how rich your life can be with visual journaling.”
Beth says that she generally has great interactions with people while she is painting plein air. She always tries to finish her paintings in one go while she is out, as a photo ‘lies’ and is not quite the same to work from.
I am sure we all left Tuesday evening with some useful tips and were encouraged to keep our own visual diaries to keep track of moments

Thank you Beth for sharing!

An interesting watch

Picture this: a rocket ship crash-lands on a planet, and an alien approaches the spacecraft. What do you see in your mind when you visualize this scene? For Alex Rosenthal (and many others), the answer is: absolutely nothing. Exploring the fascinating science of aphantasia, or the inability to gener...

Meet our May Speaker: Beth Lowe

Beth grew up on a farm near the small town of Douglas in the Northern Cape, South Africa. After completing a BA Fine Arts (HED) at Stellenbosch University, she taught art at both Primary and High School levels, and ran private art classes from home while her three children were growing up.
From farm life to living in the coastal town of Kommetjie, Cape Town, Beth has always loved to paint the beautiful outdoor scenes that surround her.

Throughout the changing seasons, and various weather conditions, Beth captures these moments in true plein air style.
Beth happily endures harsh weather conditions to capture the unexpected and beautiful fleeting moments.

Beth has work in galleries on the peninsula and holds exhibitions regularly in her home.

We look forward to hearing more about Beth's experiences of plain-air painting on Tuesday the 26 May.
