How did you spend Youth Day?

At the Alcardo Andrews Foundation (AAF), we celebrated the heroes who paved the way for us by investing in the next generation of changemakers.

In partnership with Uthando South Africa (leaders of this initiative) and its partners, we joined the launch of a brand-new 5-a-side soccer pitch at Belmor Primary School. This incredible space will provide children with a safe environment to learn, play, connect, and heal.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Principal Witten and the Belmor Primary School community for opening their doors and welcoming this initiative.

The day was filled with joy, music, food, and community spirit. A special highlight was the unveiling of a Kind Heart Bench (a space for young people to talk with a trusted person) in honour of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a lasting symbol of compassion, peace, and unity.

We were privileged to share in welcoming the Tutu family to Hanover Park, and we are especially proud of AAF youth leaders, Levi Andrews and JP Sterris, who were entrusted with supporting and accompanying Mama Leah and her family throughout the day.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this initiative possible. Together, we are creating spaces of hope, safety, healing, and opportunity for our young people.

We can't wait for tomorrow's launch of the 5 a side soccer pitch at Belmor Primary. We hope to see you there!

These are reportedly the two Texas teachers captured on school surveillance video physically mistreating a 5-year-old autistic student.
Their names are said to be Britney Henshaw (left) and Sydney Madill (right). Many online are sharing their images publicly since, as of now, no criminal charges have been filed.
A mother is demanding accountability after surveillance footage from her child’s elementary school appeared to show two staff members handling her son with violent force, leaving him with a fractured ankle.
According to Columbia-Brazoria ISD, both teachers involved have been fired, but the boy’s mother, Guadalupe Rodriguez, says termination alone is not justice.
Footage from October 30 reportedly shows one teacher forcefully throwing the child to the ground inside the classroom. Less than an hour earlier, another clip appears to show the same teacher dropping him. Later, a separate angle seems to capture a different teacher nudging or kicking the child’s already-injured ankle, apparently attempting to get him to stand.
Rodriguez, whose son is autistic and nonverbal, said watching the videos was devastating. - “This is trauma my son and I will carry forever,” she said. “I dropped to my knees and cried. I never thought I’d see my child treated like that.”
She realized something was wrong when he came home limping.: “I took him to urgent care right away, and he had a fracture and a sprain,” she explained.
The next morning, Rodriguez went to the school demanding answers. That’s when administrators allowed her to view the surveillance footage, which showed multiple alarming moments involving her son. “He was clearly in distress,” she said. “And not one of them stopped. Not one person cared.”
Wild Peach Elementary later sent a letter to parents confirming that the district reported the incident to the Texas Education Agency and that the Columbia-Brazoria ISD Police Department had forwarded the case to the Brazoria County District Attorney for review.
Despite the teachers being dismissed, Rodriguez says she wants criminal charges. “I’m relieved they’re gone, but it’s not enough,” she said. “They’re still out there, living life.”
Her son has not returned to Wild Peach Elementary since the incident, and she is now exploring legal action. The district has not publicly released the employees’ identities, but online, these two women are the names being circulated in connection to the case.

How do we surface the histories and experiences of the people we work with? How do we create pathways to healing without doing further harm?

For the past 8 weeks members of the Alcardo Andrews Foundation and other NGOs, community workers and activists came together in Hanover Park to participate in a trauma-informed conscious facilitation course facilitated by Melanie Lue of the Ground Up Collective and Lisa Marqua-Harries of Restore.

The course gave us a grounding in creating safe spaces for those we serve, and being sensitive to the ways they live with trauma (the result of past or ongoing harm). The course also gave us an opportunity to reflect with others who serve, thinking through our practices as a collective, and finding ways of holding space for our clients to surface their experiences, process, and heal.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to making the course an amazing space for growth and change!

June is Men’s Mental Health Month

This month, we've decided to share a few clips from our AAF men's group to honour men who speak out, talk through their feelings and emotions, and create supportive spaces for others.
We encourage men to speak up when they are struggling, but we also call for more safe, supportive spaces where they can do so without fear of judgement. Meaningful conversations can save lives.
