Artists over the centuries have paid homage to mothers, whether in painting, sketch, sculpture, poetry, or song.

From famous names such as Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Irma Stern, Paul Gaugain, Michaelangelo, Vincent Van Gogh, Degas and Gustav Klimt, to ancient archives and modern tributes.

Mom, you're a work of art, but also the eternal artist.

Meet the artist behind the many sculptures that transform our precinct. Anton Smit is one of South Africa's most celebrated sculptors: self-taught, internationally exhibited, and widely revered for monumental works that explore themes of suffering, reconciliation and the human spirit.

We're proud to have partnered with Anton to bring his art to Century City in two remarkable ways:

🎭 The Anton Smit Open Air Exhibition, a 31-piece collection of larger-than-life sculptures spread across the precinct, free for everyone to explore on foot, by bike or on a run.
🎭 We have three beautiful artworks in our permanent Century City Art Trail, with the Landscape of the Soul, a breathtaking 33-metre wall installation in The Subway, featuring faces up to 3 metres tall, brought to life with an original musical score. It's one of Anton's most ambitious works to date and was custom created just for Century City.

Art is not to render the visible, but to render visible. Come see it for yourself!

The iconic moment that characterises democratic freedom for South Africa is beautifully captured in the life-sized bronze statues of Nelson and Winnie Mandela.

These carefully crafted artworks and many more can be seen up close - over a hundred statues in fact!

In honour of this deeply significant day, The Long March to Freedom invites South Africans to experience the exhibition today through entry by donation only.

"We kindly encourage each visitor to make a monetary contribution that feels meaningful and appropriate to them. Every donation, regardless of amount, directly supports the sustainability of this important national heritage project."

Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning with family and friends, at Long March to Freedom you can take a moment to reconnect with our shared heritage and the values that continue to shape our future.

Chris Auret is a South African multi-disciplinary artist known for his unique painting style and inpiringly vulnerable work.

Without formal training, he has gained widespread recognition for his vibrant work on canvas and public walls. Auret’s distinctive technique features energetic brushstrokes, vibrant colors, and strong conceptual themes.

In Century City, Chris painted a beautiful mural, Peace of Mind, number 16 on our Century City Art Trail.

"In our fast-paced world, this piece draws on the serenity at the water's edge to offer a quiet, reflective moment for the viewer."

The mural depicts an intimately contemplative scene: the figure suspended within a vast universe, beyond space and time, held by a body of water.

The closed eyes and faint smile create a sense of surrender and peace as they submerge and emerge, seemingly at once, in an eternal moment of bliss.

Faith by Anton Smit is probably one of this world-renowned sculptor's most iconic silhouettes. The figure of a man with his arms stretched out in complete surrender, his face turned to the heavens.

We are incredibly fortunate to have the 3 metre Faith statue in the Anton Smit Open Air Exhibition, strikingly placed at the top of a very Bridgeway, with Table Mountain as backdrop.

With glorious sunsets, crisp morning light, and an impossible combination of shades and colours as canvas, Faith looks different every time you see it, but always as imposing as the first time.

Meet Cristina Salvoldi, artist of Concrete Present, number 2 in our Century City Art Trail.

“My professional portfolio spans miniature sets, nine-metre bronze monuments, dinosaur museum displays, architectural finishes, and everything in between.

I deeply value constructive client collaboration and, in recent years, have also enjoyed stepping into project management roles on larger works, where co-creation with like-minded colleagues has been especially rewarding.”

The “Concrete Present” sculpture is made entirely of concrete, weighs around 130kgs, and stands 1m tall.
