Ellerman House ArtAngels is an annual charity art auction showcasing the best of SA art, food and wine for the benefit of The Click Foundation (www.clickfoundation.co.za). Top South African donate works that are auctioned at the event. As of March 2017, the events have raised over R12m for the Click Foundation's foundation phase online English literacy programme being implemented with over 27,000 primary school learners across South Africa. In 2017 we are taking the event overseas for the first time, starting in London in May 2017.

Guy Simpson is a Cape Town-based artist whose practice explores the traces people leave behind in the spaces they inhabit. Working between documentation and abstraction, he transforms photographic observations into richly textured paintings, often incorporating unconventional materials such as sawdust, aluminium filings and reflective glass. His fascination with weathered surfaces, architectural details and overlooked corners of everyday life reveals how places quietly record the passage of time and the communities that once occupied them.

In Fly By, Simpson works on an intimate scale, presenting acrylic paintings that invite closer consideration of his approach to surface and detail. His wider practice encourages us to look again at the ordinary, recognising how even the smallest visual fragments can contribute to a larger understanding of place, memory and change.

Mmangaliso Nzuza is a Cape Town-based painter whose distinctive visual language explores identity, memory and the complexities of human experience. Influenced by the fragmented forms of early Cubism, his paintings combine expressive colour, angular compositions and gestural brushwork. Moving between the familiar and the imagined, his practice draws on personal experience to explore our relationship with ourselves, others and the places that shape us.

In Breeze Off The River, Nzuza turns to the rural landscapes of Zululand, recalling childhood December visits to his mother’s family and time spent on his father’s farm. Rather than relying on symbolism, the painting is guided by atmosphere and the feelings these places evoke. The openness of the landscape, the stillness and the movement of air become part of a deeply personal recollection. It is a work that considers how certain places remain with us, existing somewhere between memory and the present, familiar yet distant.

For Zimbabwean-born artist Micha Serraf, memory is closely connected to the idea of home. Drawing on childhood experiences, family histories and displacement, his practice moves between sculpture, drawing and hand-sewn tapestries. His figures often originate as sculptures made in darkness before finding their place within imagined landscapes, bringing together personal recollection, ancestral connections and a search for belonging.

In Mother and Child, Serraf works with wool and cotton, using the intimate, labour-intensive process of hand-stitching to build the composition. The title introduces a relationship central to family life, while the textile medium connects the work to his wider exploration of remembered people and places. Each sewn element contributes to a surface that rewards closer attention, bringing material and personal history into conversation.

Kate Gottgens’ paintings move between figuration and abstraction, drawing on personal experience, landscape and found photographs to explore memory, identity and the human condition. Her muted palette and expressive brushwork often leave parts of the image unresolved, creating a tension between what is recognised and what remains uncertain.

In Regarding Lost Time, Gottgens continues this engagement with memory through a large-scale oil painting whose title immediately places time and recollection at the centre of the work. Rather than fixing a single narrative, the painting sits within the ambiguity that defines much of her practice, where fragments of lived experience and remembered imagery are held just slightly out of reach.

Sam Nhlengethwa’s practice has long been shaped by jazz, a subject he approaches not simply as music, but as a space for improvisation, interpretation and visual experimentation. In his tribute works, he pays homage to musicians and artistic contemporaries, translating the freedom and complexity of jazz into compositions where collage and painting work side by side.

Tribute to Henri Texier honours the French double bassist within a large-scale performance scene. Texier sits at the centre with his instrument, joined by a vocalist, piano and stage equipment, while Nhlengethwa’s combination of photographic collage and painted elements creates shifts between realism and invention. The work reflects his interest in the visual possibilities of jazz: individual voices held together within one composition, each distinct, yet part of a larger whole.

Walter Oltmann has spent decades exploring the point where fine art and craft meet. Working through hand-fabricated processes of weaving and knotting wire, he draws on southern African wire traditions while building sculptural forms with extraordinary density and precision. In recent work, insects, plants and other small organisms become enlarged and reimagined, allowing structure, pattern and material to take on an almost anatomical presence.

Caligo belongs to this material language. Anodised aluminium wire is repeatedly coiled and woven, then punctuated with enamel paint and plastic beads to create a layered wall sculpture whose surface reveals the labour of its making. Oltmann’s treatment of wire gives the work both delicacy and physical weight, turning a material associated with line into something intricate, tactile and distinctly sculptural.

Banele Khoza’s practice is deeply personal and diaristic, moving between drawing, painting and text to explore love, longing, q***r identity and vulnerability. His work is often shaped by memory and lived experience, with an emotional directness that allows intimate moments to sit at the centre of the image.
In Reminiscing, Khoza works in watercolour, a medium that brings a lighter, more delicate quality to the page. The work’s modest scale creates a sense of closeness, while the title places recollection at the heart of the piece. Rather than defining what is being remembered, the work leaves space for ambiguity, allowing the act of looking back to remain open and personal.

Marlene Steyn builds paintings through intuition and association, allowing figures, landscapes and familiar objects to shift into one another as she works. Influenced by Surrealism, her practice explores the many selves and contradictions held within a person, creating portraits that feel layered, playful and psychologically complex.

Created for Steyn’s 2025 Mind Fullness presentation at The Armory Show in New York, Wild Goose Face brings these ideas together within a densely layered portrait. Faces, foliage and unexpected forms compete for attention across the canvas, resisting a single focal point and reflecting Steyn’s interest in identity as something multiple, changeable and continually forming.

Jeanne Hoffman’s paintings begin with place, memory and fragmented recollections. Drawing on multiple viewpoints, she creates compositions where forms meet without being fully resolved, allowing contradiction, recognition and ambiguity to coexist. She describes her works as “temporary shelters for thoughts”, spaces for contemplation rather than fixed interpretation.

In Tapestry, Maize, Plateau, distinct references are brought together within a single composition. Painted in acrylic on Italian cotton, the work reflects Hoffman’s interest in assembling fragments while leaving room for the viewer to form connections of their own.
