Open Shuhada Street is a advocacy organisation, based in Cape Town (South Africa), that campaigns for human rights in Israel and Palestine. We use advocacy, lobbying, research and education to work towards this. We believe that the resolution of the Israel-Palestinian conflict should conform to international law and be concluded through negotiations involving all parties, under independent mediati

on. An acceptable solution will advance the rights of all people in the region, and promote peace. OSS was established in 2009 after a delegation of activists visited Hebron in the West Bank and witnessed the lack of freedom of movement for Palestinians and the illegal closure of Shuhada Street to Palestinians.

‎[ما أشبه الليلة بالبارحة]
‎This is an Arab saying that says: "(Amazing) how tonight is similar to yesterday." The Z¡●n¡st plan to displace Palestinians, and try to fool and exhaust the International community, has been in action for decades. So here is a headline in a Jordanian newspaper that reads: "The forceful expulsion of the people of Gaza (by Israel) has started." This was published in March 1970, many years before Hamas or Islamic Jihad even existed.

Here is also a beautiful but sad song by the legendary Lebanese singer Fairoz. It came in 1968 before there was any Palestinian armed resistance. The lyrics of the song say:

“The (Palestinian) case has gone (to the UN) / And the complaint was submitted to the halls of the International Court (of Justice) / The (UN General) Assembly has devoted its session to discuss the case / Where representatives from all nations have assembled / They came from all places / From the countries of the North and the South / Small countries and big / Everyone listened to the official committee / And to the speech of the Secretary-General / As he talked about peace / (UN SC) Members discussed the case and presented resolutions / They talked about justice, the freedom of the (Palestinian) people / their human dignity and bill of rights / About ceasefire and ending the conflict / Then they voted, and gave statements / Deciding on the outstanding problems as they reached consensus / Reliable sources were keen to quote informed sources /That the panel has studied the case and decided / Decided to send an envoy / And the envoy declared that he's been sent by the officials / And that a resolution was on the way / But when night came, the judges were tired / Exhausted by the long discussions / So they closed their notebooks and went to sleep/ Meanwhile, in the outside, there was the sound of winter and darkness / As miserable people were searching for peace/ They were sleeping hungry in homeless shelters / While the winds were still uprooting their tents."
