Our story

We’re on a big hairy mission to tackle youth unemployment in South Africa and be the driving force behind increasing access to economic opportunity for millions of young South Africans. Our country is youthful, with two-thirds of our population under 35, many of whom try to enter the economy but lack the education, skills and networks that provide access to opportunities. We want to help solve that! Naspers Labs is an innovative and holistic youth development programme designed to open the closed doors that stand between a young unemployed person and his or her first employment opportunity.

Our programme, developed by partners Naspers, a global internet group and one of the largest technology investors in the world, and social enterprise RLabs, provides personalised development to each young person to address their unique set of obstacles. Our students go on a structured development journey that starts with enabling them to believe in their own potential, and unlocking their hopes and dreams. Next is focused and tailored learning through online learning platforms like Udemy, Codecademy and SoloLearn. Lastly, we prepare our new graduates for the world of work and their first work opportunity.

Our vision is to have Naspers Lab cafés in cities around South Africa in communities where unemployed young people live – spaces where our rock star ambassadors will provide help and support to make the most of the programme and the tailor-made learning and development platform. It is this unique blend of the best of technology with the best of human potential that unlocks the full potential of young people.

We piloted the programme in Delft and Phillippi in the Cape with remarkable results over a 1-year period. This year (2019), we will expand the pilot to test additional Lab types as well as a township incubator for graduate-owned businesses and start-ups. Youth unemployment is South Africa’s most critical socio-economic challenge and not one we can solve on our own. Join the movement!
