The YCLSA Brian Bunting District strongly condemns the heartless and unforgivable failure of the management at CPUT in addressing the dire student accommodation crisis. It is an absolute disgrace that, in a democratic South Africa, students, especially those from poor backgrounds, are being subjected to the horrific indignity of sleeping on the streets because their institution refuses to prioritize their basic needs.

This is not just a failure of an institution; it is a failure of leadership, especially by black leaders entrusted with the well-being of young people from working-class backgrounds. Such negligence cannot be tolerated in any society that claims to uphold the rights and dignity of its citizens. The children of the poor deserve better than being treated as second-class citizens in their own country.

We call on the President and the relevant ministers to immediately intervene. It is time for the highest levels of government to visit institutions like CPUT to see the dire conditions students are being forced to endure. This issue must be treated with the urgency and gravity it demands. The government must act swiftly to ensure that no student is left without a place to sleep while pursuing their education. This ongoing crisis must be addressed now!
