In an emergency, every second matters.

A medical alert bracelet, necklace, or card can provide critical information to healthcare professionals when a person is unable to communicate. For people living with haemophilia and other inherited bleeding disorders, this information can help ensure appropriate care is provided as quickly as possible.

A medical alert should include:
• Your bleeding disorder diagnosis
• Any inhibitors (if applicable)
• Emergency contact details
• Your treatment centre information

Do you have a medical alert?

If not, the South African Haemophilia Foundation may be able to assist. Contact SAHF to find out more about obtaining a medical alert.

Because in an emergency, the right information can make all the difference.

On Youth Day 2026, we honour the courage of the young people of 1976 and we recommit to a future worth building for the young people of today.

For children and young people living with bleeding disorders in South Africa, that future includes:
• Earlier diagnosis, so they do not lose years waiting for answers
• Access to treatment, so a bleed does not become a complication
• Education, so they understand their condition and can advocate for themselves
• Community, so they know they are not alone

SAHF continues to work toward a South Africa where a child's access to care does not depend on where they were born, which school they attend, or which hospital is closest.

Happy Youth Day. The work continues.

World Blood Donor Day falls on 14 June every year.

For most people, donating blood is an act of generosity for a stranger. For people living with bleeding disorders, access to safe blood and plasma-derived products can be the difference between a manageable condition and a life-threatening crisis.

Blood donation matters, not just in emergencies, but as a consistent part of care.

Strong healthcare systems are built through preventative care, education, and community collaboration.

According to the World Federation of Hemophilia, an estimated 1.1 million males worldwide live with haemophilia, and the majority remain undiagnosed.

Without diagnosis, access to treatment, education, and proper care remains out of reach.

This is why awareness matters.
This is why education matters.
And this is why strong healthcare communities matter.

Earlier diagnosis and better support systems can help reduce complications, improve quality of life, and strengthen long-term patient outcomes.

Improving bleeding disorder care requires all of us working together, patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, treatment centres, and advocates.

Home therapy and self-infusion training can change daily life for people living with bleeding disorders.

With the right training and support, patients and caregivers can respond to bleeds earlier, reducing delays in treatment and unnecessary hospital visits.

This can also mean:
• fewer missed school days
• less time away from work
• lower travel costs
• greater independence and confidence
• reduced pressure on families and caregivers

For many families, access to home therapy is not only about healthcare.
It is about stability, dignity, and quality of life.

Home therapy and self-infusion training must always be guided by the appropriate healthcare team.
