♿ Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD).

Over 1 billion people worldwide live with a disability and according to the WebAIM Million Report, 98% of homepages still have at least one accessibility failure.
At HospiVision, accessibility is not only a website concern. It's part of how we love our neighbour.

It's a large-print prayer card for a patient with low vision. It's a wheelchair-accessible chapel visit. It's slowing down our speech for someone with hearing loss. It's making sure our online resources, brochures and training materials can be read by everyone- not only those with perfect sight, full mobility, or fast internet.

This year, we're committing to a full accessibility audit of hospivision.org.za, our PDFs, and our content- and sharing what we learn openly, so other South African non-profits can follow.

True care meets people where they are. No barriers. No exceptions. Every person deserves access.

A reflection for the weekend.

When someone is diagnosed with a serious illness, the first wave is usually shock, fear, denial and the deepest human need in that moment is SECURITY. To know they are not alone.

Our care during diagnosis is empathy. The spiritual focus is God's abiding compassion, the assurance that God is with us when we feel trapped and helpless (Psalm 118:5–8).

If someone you love has just been diagnosed, please don't try to fix it. Just be present. Sit. Listen. That is the gift.

Have a peaceful weekend. 💛

Grief is one of the most universal human experiences, yet it remains deeply personal and often misunderstood. Whether you are navigating your own loss or supporting someone who is grieving, understanding what grief looks like and how to respond can make a meaningful difference. What Is Grief? Grief....

Most of us freeze when a friend is grieving. We don't know what to say, so we say nothing, or we say the wrong thing.

Here is what actually helps:

✔ Use the name of the person who died. 'Allen,' not 'your son.' It honours their life.
✔ Follow their lead. Let them take the conversation where it needs to go. Make room for silence.
✔ Be open to any emotion, grief shows up as anger, tears, laughter, even silence.
✔ Remember anniversaries. A simple message on a birthday or death-day means everything.

Please avoid:
✘ 'They're in a better place.'
✘ 'Time heals all things.'
✘ 'At least…'

Save this for when you need it. Share it with someone who is supporting a friend in loss. https://www.hospivision.org.za/blogs/projects/understanding-grief-a-guide-to-bereavement-and-loss

From today until 15 June, South Africa goes turquoise for our elderly.

South Africa is home to 6.6 million people aged 60 and over and many of them sit in hospital wards for hours, sometimes days, without a single visit. They are often the most spiritually rich, and the most lonely.

HospiVision volunteers spend time at the bedsides of elderly patients- listening to their stories, praying with them, holding their hand. Sometimes the most powerful spiritual care is simply: "I see you. You matter."

This Go Turquoise season, we're standing with older South Africans and we're asking you to stand with us.

If you visit a hospital this month, take a few extra minutes. Sit with someone older. Ask about their life.

It costs nothing. It changes everything.

Published for the Go Turquoise for the Elderly Campaign | 15 May – 15 June From 15 May to 15 June, communities across South Africa wear turquoise to draw attention to the older people in our families, neighbourhoods, congregations and hospital wards. This week we honoured the nurses who walk the wards with us.

At HospiVision, we are continually moved by the courage in how you hold a trembling hand, the gentleness in how you deliver hard news, the steadiness you carry into rooms heavy with fear, grief, and hope. Nursing is not only a profession, it is a ministry of presence.

Alongside our volunteers, pastors and counsellors, you are the ones who notice the patient who hasn't had a visitor, who pause to pray with a frightened family, who carry the spiritual weight of healing long after your shift ends. Spiritual care and nursing care are woven together and we are deeply grateful to walk this road with you.

To every nurse serving in our partner hospitals across Gauteng and the Western Cape: thank you. For your hands, your hearts, and your holy work.

Happy International Nurses Day.

Mother’s Day at Tshwane District Hospital

Last Saturday, our hearts overflowed as we celebrated Mother’s Day with the mothers in the maternity ward at Tshwane District Hospital. On a day usually spent at home with loved ones, we wanted to make sure these mamas felt seen, valued, and embraced.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this day possible:

Collage Community Church — for your warm participation in the outreach, the beautiful gift packages for the mothers, and the donation and planting of trees. You are quite literally sowing life and hope.

The 3rd year Health Science students from the University of Pretoria — thank you for the thoughtful flyers and for being present and part of the outreach. You are the future of compassionate healthcare.

CANSA-TLC Nicus Lodge — for the loving donation of beanies to keep our tiniest babies warm. Every stitch is a hug.

To every mother we met: you are strong, you are seen, and you are deeply loved.
