The Seals of Nam is a global initiative that had its humble beginnings in mid 2010. Founded by well known South African animal rights campaigner, Pat Dickens, The Seals of Nam aims to unite interested parties to bring the stench of the Namibian seal massacre to the nostrils of an indignant world. Initially nothing more than a pipe dream, Pat took on the the project with the guts and determination of a true warrior. He resigned from his job in the corporate world and set about the task of raising awareness. Through his dedicated efforts, and in the face of immense opposition, through trials and tribulations, Pat worked towards getting the plight of the Cape fur Seals in Namibia the recognition they deserve. Today, The Seals of Nam is recognised as being on the forefront of the battle to end the Namibian hunt. Our successes can no longer be attributed to just one man, but to a multitude of respected organisations and a broad cross section of individuals. Through the collaborative efforts of many, The Seals of Nam has garnered the support of celebrities, had representatives appearing on national television networks, been guests on radio shows and staged successful demonstrations against the Namibian hunt in several leading international cities. We have generated major petitions, had news articles printed in local and international media, provided logistical support to Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, and even appeared before the Namibian Government along with major industry players such as IFAW, Seal Alert SA, WSPA, NSPCA, and others. We will continue to fight for an end of the Namibian hunt. We believe it to be unsustainable, illegal, immoral, uneconomical and a violation of human rights, as well as basic animal welfare standards. We encourage other organisations to join us in our initiative, to set aside any differences, and to put up a united front against the atrocities that are perpetuated on the Cape fur Seals. We would love to have you on board as the stronger our coalition becomes, the better our chances at putting an end to the brutal practice of seal clubbing.

Hawaiian monk seal RT62 was rescued from O‘ahu after showing signs of neurological distress including tremors and impaired use of her hind flippers 🚑 Our experts knew diagnosing this endangered seal would require tests outside of our usual admission exam protocol, so they called upon our friends at Veterinary Emergency + Referral Center of Hawaii (VERC) for help unraveling this mystery 🕵️

In order to better understand RT62’s clinical signs, veterinarians at VERC generously provided both their expertise and facilities to perform the first ever MRI on a Hawaiian monk seal. After her MRI, RT62 was transported to our hospital on Hawai‘i Island for extended care thanks to a flight from our friends at Mauna Loa Helicopters and Mauna Loa Aero 🚁🏥

While RT62’s case continues to be a bit of a puzzle, our veterinary team has seen improvements to her symptoms during her time in care and happily report she has been bright, alert, eating well and interacting with fellow patients 🦭 As one of the most endangered pinnipeds on the planet, every individual monk seal is critical to recovery efforts for this species. We are beyond grateful for the collaboration and aloha from our partners to give RT62 the best care and a second chance at life 🌊🌈

Zhejiang Province, Wenzhou City, China. My business partner Mr. 叶 reuniting with his dog 多多 after it had been missing for three days. He let the dog off leash in the park during a late night walk. It never came when called. For three days we have been trudging the city looking for this dog. No work. From 10am to 10pm We've been putting up notices, calling animal shelters, tracking the dog via police CCTV etc. Found him this morning. I have known 叶 for 11 years. I know him as an astute businessman. He lives for work. He's usually dressed in suit and tie. He dropped everything. Cancelled a major trip to Hangzhou. Put a deal worth millions on hold to search for his dog.
To the animal activists who follow this page and continue to generalise that Chinese people are scum and hate animals.... Shame on you. You are ignorant racists. I saw a grown man break down in tears today. I saw a man, irrespective of his nationality, cry at being reunited with his dog. If you cannot see the love here.... You are blind. The vast majority of Chinese people are animal lovers. They are amazing people and care deeply for the environment. I live in China. I speak Chinese. I know what I am talking about. Stop being blinded by the hypocrisy of Western media.

A second rabid Cape fur seal was confirmed in the Eastern Cape after it washed ashore at Sardinia Bay, showing symptoms like seizures and foaming at the mouth, and died shortly after. File Image.
