Hudson’s Story

Project Breathe Strong began with Hudson Barber’s own journey through uncontrolled asthma and a hospitalization that opened her eyes to how little she’d been taught about managing the condition. She realised she didn’t fully understand her triggers, how air quality affects breathing, or even the correct way to use an inhaler. As she worked to fill those gaps for herself, she became increasingly drawn to the public health side of asthma and the difference education can make.
Through Project Breathe Strong, Hudson’s mission is to help children understand and manage asthma with confidence. Her work focuses on practical education, self advocacy, and the role that cleaner air plays in improving long term health outcomes. This project also carries personal meaning for her. Hudson’s father is from South Africa, and through her research for PBS she has learned more about the burden of asthma in South Africa and the urgent need for stronger awareness and education.
NAEP is proud to support and collaborate with young people like Hudson who bring passion, insight, and lived experience to asthma education. Their voices help shape a future where every child understands their condition and breathes a little easier.
