South Africa holds the delicate title of the third most biologically diverse country in the world, containing 16% of all known coastal marine species. But that title isn’t something we can take for granted, it has to be actively protected.

Biodiversity loss is a real threat, we see it daily, with several of our indigenous seabird species at risk of extinction: From the African Penguin to the Cape Gannet, every individual that comes through our doors plays a crucial part in the balance of our ecosystem.

The 500th egg admitted this season has officially hatched! 🐣🐧

It’s already been a record-breaking year for chick and egg admissions, resulting in many mouths to feed.

Predation is a year-round threat to Critically Endangered African Penguins.

Using data from SANCCOB’s Western Cape facility, our research team analysed more than 1,000 confirmed or suspected predation-related cases involving seals, sharks, caracals, mongooses and other predators.

The findings help SANCCOB better understand mortality trends and support African Penguin conservation management.

Endangered Species Day served as an important reminder that the African Penguin is Critically Endangered and running out of time.🐧

With declining populations, pressure on food sources, and ongoing environmental challenges, urgent conservation action is needed to secure their future.

Together with our conservation partners, we continue to strengthen rescue, rehabilitation, research and response efforts to improve outcomes for this species and others along our coastline.💫

During the week of 25 May, Alon Sarembock will swim from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand to raise funds for SANCCOB. 💫

Heatwaves earlier this year and a forecast wet winter are placing increased pressure on seabird rescue and rehabilitation, making additional funding essential.

Today on Endangered Species Day, we recognise the seabirds along our coastline that are fighting for survival 🐧

Among them is the Critically Endangered African Penguin, alongside species such as the Cape Gannet, Cape Cormorant, Bank Cormorant, and other seabirds facing growing pressures across their populations.

From declining fish stocks, climate change, pollution and habitat disturbance, these birds are impacted in different ways but all depend on a healthy marine ecosystem.

Through rescue, rehabilitation, research and conservation action, we continue working to protect them but lasting change depends on all of us. 💙

Support our work and help protect seabirds for future generations.

Severe weather and flooding in Cape Town over the past few days led to 13 African Penguin eggs and 12 chicks being admitted to SANCCOB after nests were flooded and abandoned. While one egg and one chick could unfortunately not be saved, the remaining birds are stable and receiving specialised care from our veterinary, rehabilitation, and chick rearing teams.

As weather conditions become more unpredictable, the pressure on endangered seabird populations continues to grow, making rapid rescue, rehabilitation, and conservation efforts more important than ever.
