Presiding Senior Leader and Senior Traditional Healer Zainodean Humcumqua Simmers.

Recently appointed to the Joint Steering Committee of the South African Cannabis Club Alliance. Simmers speaks of his own experiences in the emerging Cannabis space and the call for Ubuntu, inclusion of the original Snyman (Khoisan) and the recognition of social club models such as that offered by GROW one Africa.

In this junction of the cannabis space it is vitally important to include legacy farmers and growers into a compliant system. The industry cannot progress without the full inclusion of legacy growers.

STH Simmers works tirelessly for inclusion of the indigenous communities in various opportunities.

πŸŒ… Honoring Tsui//Goab – The Supreme Being of the Khoikhoi

In the rich spiritual traditions of the Khoikhoi (Khoekhoe) people of southern Africa, Tsui//Goab (also written TsΕ©i-||goab) stands as the creator, the god of the heavens, rain, thunder, and light.

His name is often translated as Wounded Knee” β€” from the epic battle where he defeated ||Gaunab, the god of darkness and destruction, but was struck on the knee in the fight. Another beautiful interpretation links his name to Red Dawn”, symbolizing the first light that chases away the night each morning.

Tsui//Goab is the bringer of life: he creates the world, provides rain for the land, makes crops flourish, and watches over the people with kindness and power. Every morning, the Khoikhoi would turn their faces east to greet the dawn and offer prayers to him.

In a world that often forgets its roots, remembering Tsui//Goab is a powerful reminder of the deep spiritual heritage of southern Africa’s First Peoples β€” a celebration of light triumphing over darkness, resilience, and the life-giving forces of nature.

Who else knew this powerful figure from Khoi mythology?

Backyard ducks are significantly easier to keep than most people expect β€” and they provide genuine practical value in a garden beyond egg production that chickens simply cannot match.

Here is what makes each breed suited to different situations, and what to know before starting:

πŸ¦† Khaki Campbell β€” The highest egg producer of any duck breed, capable of 280–320 eggs per year β€” often outperforming most chicken breeds on a per-bird basis. Active and busy, best in setups with adequate space to forage.

πŸ¦† Welsh Harlequin β€” The best all-round choice for a small backyard. Calm, friendly, 250–300 eggs per year, and beautiful patterned plumage. Developed in Wales in the 1960s from Khaki Campbell breeding stock and retaining the production traits with a calmer temperament.

πŸ¦† Indian Runner β€” The most visually distinctive duck β€” stands completely upright like a penguin and runs rather than waddling. Moderate egg production (150–200 per year) but extraordinary slug and snail control. A small flock of Runners in a vegetable garden eliminates slug problems without any other intervention.

πŸ¦† Muscovy β€” Technically not a true duck (a separate species) but commonly kept alongside ducks. Completely silent β€” they do not quack. This makes them far more suitable for urban or suburban settings where noise is a concern. Excellent foragers.

πŸ¦† Pekin β€” The breed most people picture when they think of a white duck. Very calm, very friendly, tolerates handling well, and excellent with children. Lower egg production than Khaki Campbells but significantly easier to manage.

The most important thing to know about keeping ducks that surprises most first-time keepers: ducks require access to water deep enough to submerge their entire head β€” they need to flush their nostrils and eyes regularly. A simple wide low container changed daily is sufficient. A pond is not required.

Ducks also do not need a roost β€” they sleep on flat ground and prefer a simple dry shelter with good ventilation over a traditional elevated chicken coop.
