Where in the world are Kai and Nori now? 🐢📍

Since our Turtle Conservation Centre released these remarkable turtles back into their ocean home, they have been on incredible journeys. 🌊

Loggerhead turtle, Kai has spent the past month exploring South Africa's coastline, stopping off in a biodiversity hotspot near Kenton-on-Sea, where he appears to be enjoying some productive foraging. 🦀🪸

Green turtle, Nori has travelled more than 7 600km since her release and is now approaching internationally important turtle habitats near São Tomé and Príncipe. Will she head for the islands or continue north along Africa's coastline? 🌍🌊

Their movements are giving us fascinating insights into turtle behaviour, migration, and the importance of international conservation efforts. 💙

Happy World Ocean Day! 💙🌊

Did you know Cape Town has three layers of ocean protection working together to safeguard our incredible marine spaces?

⛰️ MPAs like the Table Mountain National Park MPA (legal protection for marine life and habitats).
🏄‍♂️ Hope Spots like False Bay (where community action helps drive conservation).
💧 Blue Flag beaches and marinas (strict standards for water quality, safety, and environmental management).

We’re incredibly proud to share that the Ocean Campus Productions team has received two awards at the 2026 International Tourism Film Festival Africa.

Wild Waterfront received Gold in the Doc TV and Web category, while Raggies: A Shark Release received Silver in the Tourism Video 2026 category.

Wild Waterfront was made possible through the support of the City of Cape Town’s Film Fund, whose investment in local storytelling helped bring this remarkable documentary to life.

Raggies: A Shark Release was made possible with the support of SCAR - Sharks Conservation and Research - whose work continues to contribute to shark conservation, research, and public awareness.

A huge congratulations to the Productions team, Marguerite and Jerome, for these well-deserved recognitions! And thank you to the broader Ocean Campus, Two Oceans Aquarium and Foundation teams, and dozens of supporter that helped bring these stories to life behind the scenes!

We’re so proud of what you’ve achieved, and we can’t wait to see what you create next.

Two turtles with completely different journeys. 🐢📍

Our Turtle Conservation Centre is tracking the post-release movements of Kai, a juvenile loggerhead, and Nori, a subadult green turtle. Since returning to the wild, Kai has stayed close to South Africa’s coastline, while Nori appears to be making an epic journey across the Atlantic Ocean basin.

Where are they heading? What can their movements tell us about life after rehabilitation? And could Nori be on her way to some of West Africa’s most important green turtle nesting grounds?

Our olive ridley turtle Sage had her weekly weigh-in and measurements checked today and she’s looking shell-tastic! 💚

Our Turtle Conservation Centre team measures her curved and straight carapace length and width using measuring tape and calipers to carefully monitor her growth and recovery progress. These regular health checks help us make sure Sage is maintaining a healthy weight and staying strong on her journey toward release.

Slow and steady wins the race to recovery! 🌊

Kai, our juvenile loggerhead turtle, showed this fascinating tail movement just before his release by the Turtle Conservation Centre back into the ocean! 🐢

While a wagging tail in dogs usually means excitement, sea turtles move their tails for very different reasons. Their tails help with steering and balance in the water, play an important role in reproduction, and may also twitch during waste elimination.

Unlike some tortoises, sea turtles do not wag their tails to communicate happiness or greet other animals. 💙

Every movement has a biological purpose! 💚

Come rain or shine, our Wildlife Monitors disentangle Cape fur seals! 🌧️🦭

Despite the heavy rain, Ayanda Cimani recently went under the Seal Platform to remove a box band from a juvenile seal's neck.

Ayanda swam quietly towards the young seal, who was scratching an itch, none the wiser. Using a special cutting tool, Ayanda successfully removed the box band from the seal. As you can see, this aquatic disentangling method is incredibly effective in lessening stress for the entangled seal and keeping human-wildlife interaction to a minimum. 💙

This is also a reminder that we all need to be more mindful about our plastic use, and to always cut loops to prevent them from becoming nooses. ✂️⭕️
