We’re back in the Silvermine valley for round two! The Port Jackson is relentless and in 6 months the growth is back in full force, albeit not as dense as a carpet like before which was 3 months after the fire. This time round we can’t just pull out seedlings but have had to bring our loppers and poppers along as well.

Loppers are a type of scissors used for pruning twigs and small branches, like pruning shears with longer handles.

A "Tree Popper" is a specialised, manual gardening tool designed to leverage invasive trees and shrubs out of the ground, including their roots

Two sets of before and after pictures from our Hermanus team today. It makes us so happy to know that these pines are down and will not be throwing their thousands of seeds into the fynbos ever again!
We can almost hear the landscape singing its thanks.

Tuesday morning saw the first volunteer hack in the Silvermine valley this year - a group of visiting students from Germany. Despite hand-pulling millions of Port Jackson seedlings last year in a great post-fire clearing effort, a lot of work remains. The plants are bigger now, so we have invested in tree poppers to get them out, roots and all. We have two permanent teams working in the area every day, and with the help of many volunteers, we hope to get the valley clear by springtime! We will advertise volunteer opportunities here. If anyone would like to bring a group to spend a morning doing meaningful work, please contact us, but be warned, 'once you pop, you can’t stop!' 😁💪

Join the Branch Out team on Saturday the 21st of March for a River Ecology session in the Silvermine River Valley. Get in touch directly with them for more details.

Branch Out is a youth-empowered conservation organisation based in Cape Town, empowering young adults (18+) to connect with nature, build practical skills, and take meaningful action for the environment.

At Branch Out, conservation isn’t just volunteering; it’s a chance to grow. Through hands-on activities like snare patrols, ecological restoration projects, beach clean-ups, and botany walks, we help young people develop real-world skills, confidence, and purpose.

But it’s also about connection. We’re building a vibrant, inclusive community where youth can meet like-minded peers, form lasting friendships, and grow together. We believe impact happens when we learn by doing, especially when we do it together. That’s why collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We partner with conservation organisations, local businesses, and community groups to support and empower our youth every step of the way.

Whether you're just curious or ready to take action, Branch Out is a space to learn, grow, and make a difference - together!

On Saturday we gathered the teams and did a massive blitz on the slopes of Tokai mountainside. It’s incredible just how much we can acheive when we have such a large group doing the work. The focus was on the gumtrees and long-leaf wattle.

When you're out walking, trail running or even mountain biking on Table Mountain we all feel a sense of happiness, quiet and peace (feel free to add your own adjectives in the comments). While you've been doing this, Cormac Cullinan has been quietly fighting for Table Mountain to gain legal status and rights of it's own.

For many this may seem esoteric and a bit of stretch of the imagination but Table Mountain is home to diverse range of fauna and flora that need our protection and the law is one of the ways to do it.

"The real point of recognising rights of nature, he says, is not to give mountains power over humans. It’s to impose responsibilities on humans. It is about changing how humans govern other humans in relation to the Earth. It is a distinction that matters."

Read the article on the Daily Maverick to understand more about just what he is fighting for.

Fynbos LIFE - Locally Indigenous Flora Education is holding an auction on the 24th of March of beautiful fynbos art to raise funds for their incredible organisation. Please have a look at the original post to see some of the art that is up for grabs.

FynbosLIFE is a wildlife charity and non-profit organisation, run by botanists, ecologists and horticulturists. Proudly based in Cape Town, we protect and promote the City’s exceptional yet highly threatened local lowland fynbos biodiversity, through educational horticulture, habitat restoration projects, and our conservation nursery.

Hip Hip Hooray! 🎉 🥳🎈
Today sees two new teams added to our Sugarbird workforce.
Team 1 is starting in a brand new area for us, the glorious Kogelberg. For now, they are working together with our seasoned Hermanus team, which will show them the ropes and familiarize them with the Sugarbird way.
The second new team is starting in Silvermine; we will add pictures of them later.
Many hands together can do this! 💚💚💚💪💪💪

We love it when we get pictures of the men working and then spot a couple of scouts in the background that joined in for the day.
Thank you for your service scouts!
