Adventure Awaits: Help Us Bring Warmth and Hope to West Coast Paternoster Youth

In the heart of South Africa’s West Coast, where the Atlantic breeze meets resilient communities, a transformative opportunity is taking shape. We are thrilled to announce a powerful new collaboration between our local NGO, Sheltersuit SA and Paternoster Project Hoopsig to launch the Adventure Enrichment Camp and we need your help to make it a reality.

For many under-resourced youth in our region, "adventure" is often a concept reserved for screens or stories. Our mission is to change that by providing a safe, immersive, and life-altering outdoor experience that builds leadership, resilience, and a deep connection to nature.

The Collaboration with Paternoster project, Hoopsig: More Than Just a Camp

This isn’t just a weekend away; it’s a holistic approach to youth development. By partnering with Sheltersuit SA, we are integrating world-class functional protection with outdoor education. The learners from Hoopsig who have been selected for the camp, have already shown leadership, teamwork and discipline. This outdoor adventure is part of a reward system for more than 15 youth have successfully obtained in obtaining the points from the Rstar Paternoster Hoopsig Jiu Jitsu club.
Sheltersuit SA Foundation have supplied 20 shelterbags custom made for young children.

It has taken 12 months of extra hard work (and many years of rejection) to appreciate the power of persistence and today I would like to share the lesson with everyone needing encouragement.
Perseverance is not just a key to achieving success—it's the driving force that keeps your journey alive when the road gets tough. By continuing to refine your approach, you’ll eventually attract the audience that truly values your work. Their appreciation and loyalty will be the reward for your persistence.
So, don’t give up when things seem slow or hard. Keep pushing, keep learning, and keep improving. The right audience is out there waiting to appreciate what you have to offer, and when you find them, the rewards will be more than worth the effort.
Look for what others need and you will find it in the most unusual places.

We produce Shelterbags; water- and windproof bags that unfold into a small tent, providing full-body protection to the homeless. The Shelterbags are given away for free to the homeless.

What we stand for

We believe that everyone deserves warmth protection and dignity, no matter where you’re from.

Worldwide, millions of people are forced to sleep outside in the cold. Poverty, mental illness, unexpected loss of jobs, natural disasters, and wars are top causes of homelessness around the world.

Giving warmth and protection

We do this by producing our Shelterbag; an adaptation of our Sheltersuit, more suitable for the warmer South African climate. They are water- and windproof bags that unfold into a small tent. Thanks to an optimal ventilation, the person wearing the suit will not be at risk of overheating. Additionally, the Shelterbag is lightweight, can be rolled up in seconds and is easily carried along. The suits also contain a compartment in which personal items can be stored, a built-in pillow, and additional space for padding in the bottom of the sleeping bag. The Shelterbag is given away for free to the homeless and refugees.

Locally produced in our Social Factory

The units are manufactured in the first of its kind social factory in Faure, a suburb of Cape Town. This is where The Ark is located. It is a temporary shelter for men, women, youth, and children that were once homeless, that focuses on reintegration into society. Additionally, The Ark offers aid in terms of education, work, and psychological assistance.

In The Ark we find the Skills Centre, which offers young men and women the opportunity to learn a trade that will make them self-sufficient once they move on from The Ark. In the Skills Centre’s sewing workshop, women and youngsters manufacture Shelterbags. The workshop currently provides full time work to 5 employees. The customised Sheltersuits are produced in collaboration with YWAP: Youth With a Purpose. Of course, the necessary materials are locally sourced.

We encourage our workers to be financially and socially independent, which enables them to build a better future.

Reducing waste flows

The new South African factory offers multiple advantages: - We create jobs; - Protection of homeless persons who are without alternative solutions; - We promote sustainability by reusing by-products; - We combat pollution from ‘homeless blankets’.

‘Homeless blankets’ are distributed around South Africa among people living on the streets. In time they simply end up strewn about around the city. The Shelterbag is a way of curtailing this form of littering.

How we started

Sheltersuit is founded by Bas Timmer in 2014, The Netherlands. When the father of a close friend died on the streets of hypothermia, Bas Timmer, founder of Sheltersuit Foundation, had the urge to make a change. He felt that no one should have to face such a horrendous fate. To protect more homeless people from the cold, he designed the first Sheltersuit.

Sheltersuit International - The Movement

By setting up Sheltersuit factories at national levels that focus on local needs, various parties will benefit. This independent Sheltersuit sister company will help to keep local homeless people and refugees protected and warm, provide employment and coaching in their social factory and moreover help reduce waste-flows by working with local textile companies.
