Late last night, an Uber driver responded to a pickup request in Karree Avenue, Bonteheuwel, where he was tragically ambushed. Upon arriving, he was robbed at gunpoint, shot at, and his vehicle was stolen. Thankfully, although he sustained a gunshot injury, his injuries were not life-threatening.
I want to sincerely thank the residents who acted swiftly by alerting me and providing critical information. Because of the community's quick response, we were able to coordinate with our law enforcement agencies, with the outstanding assistance of the South African Police Service Flying Squad. As a result, the stolen vehicle has been successfully recovered and, following the necessary forensic and investigative processes, will be returned to its rightful owner.
While this is an important breakthrough, our work is not yet complete. We appeal to anyone who may have information about those responsible for this cowardly attack to come forward. Every piece of information, no matter how small, could assist investigators in identifying and arresting the perpetrators.
Together, we can ensure that justice is served, that those responsible are held fully accountable for their actions, and that Bonteheuwel remains a community that stands united against crime.
Thank you to everyone who played a role in this successful recovery, and to our dedicated law enforcement officers for their swift and professional response.
