Vacancy: SPP Land & Agrarian Transformation Programme Lead
The Surplus People Project (SPP) is a long-established land-rights NGO working with rural communities in the Western and Northern Cape to support their struggles for land, food, climate and gender justice.
SPP seeks to appoint a Land Programme Lead in its Cape Town office.
The Land Programme Lead role:
The successful candidate will strategically lead SPP's land-related work encompassing advocacy, research and mobilisation, in support of land and agrarian transformation. Working to secure access to land for small-scale farmers and advance the land rights of farm workers and farm dwellers through advocacy and relationship building with government departments, agencies and relevant stakeholders.
Key work areas and responsibilities:
Provide strategic leadership to the SPP land portfolio, and execute programme objectives in line with SPPs vision, mission and objectives, including:
• Lead SPP land-related work including the development and implementation of appropriate strategic objectives.
• Manage activities under the land portfolio and support SPP field-based staff (Programme Coordinators), including in their professional development.
• Develop and implement advocacy strategies to drive SPP’s land-related work and liaise with stakeholders such as community forums, CBO and NGO partners, in addition to all three spheres of government.
• Actively contribute to the SPP’s financial, resource and organisational sustainability.
• Write, compile and develop regular reports and publications in collaboration with CEO, Research Lead and Communication Coordinator.
Requirements:
• A demonstrable commitment to social justice and SPP’s values.
• A degree (or comparable qualification) in a social science, legal, public management, agricultural or other relevant land-related discipline.
• A sound understanding of South Africa’s larger social-political and environmental context, including gender imperatives.
• Strong knowledge of land and agrarian reform in South Africa, including land tenure and farm worker / dweller rights and issues.
• At least five years experience in a NGO, government or social justice organisation setting.
• Familiarity with community social justice campaigns and an ability to liaise and advocate with diverse stakeholders, including those within the state.
• English-language writing proficiency and the ability to communicate with varied stakeholders. Communicative competence in Afrikaans and isiXhosa would be advantageous.
• A valid unendorsed driver’s license (for a manual transmission vehicle)
• The ability to work after-hours and on weekends from time-to-time.
Other skills and attributes sought:
• Flexibility, self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Sound problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong project management, negotiation, facilitation, lobbying and advocacy skills.
• Knowledge of, and links to networks in the land, food system, environmental and related sectors.
• Strong institutional knowledge of land policy. A proven aptitude for engaging with state-based actors and officials will be an advantage.
