Vacancy: SPP Land & Agrarian Transformation Programme Lead

The Surplus People Project (SPP) is a long-established land-rights NGO working with rural communities in the Western and Northern Cape to support their struggles for land, food, climate and gender justice.
SPP seeks to appoint a Land Programme Lead in its Cape Town office.

The Land Programme Lead role:

The successful candidate will strategically lead SPP's land-related work encompassing advocacy, research and mobilisation, in support of land and agrarian transformation. Working to secure access to land for small-scale farmers and advance the land rights of farm workers and farm dwellers through advocacy and relationship building with government departments, agencies and relevant stakeholders.

Key work areas and responsibilities:

Provide strategic leadership to the SPP land portfolio, and execute programme objectives in line with SPPs vision, mission and objectives, including:

• Lead SPP land-related work including the development and implementation of appropriate strategic objectives.
• Manage activities under the land portfolio and support SPP field-based staff (Programme Coordinators), including in their professional development.
• Develop and implement advocacy strategies to drive SPP’s land-related work and liaise with stakeholders such as community forums, CBO and NGO partners, in addition to all three spheres of government.
• Actively contribute to the SPP’s financial, resource and organisational sustainability.
• Write, compile and develop regular reports and publications in collaboration with CEO, Research Lead and Communication Coordinator.

Requirements:

• A demonstrable commitment to social justice and SPP’s values.
• A degree (or comparable qualification) in a social science, legal, public management, agricultural or other relevant land-related discipline.
• A sound understanding of South Africa’s larger social-political and environmental context, including gender imperatives.
• Strong knowledge of land and agrarian reform in South Africa, including land tenure and farm worker / dweller rights and issues.
• At least five years experience in a NGO, government or social justice organisation setting.
• Familiarity with community social justice campaigns and an ability to liaise and advocate with diverse stakeholders, including those within the state.
• English-language writing proficiency and the ability to communicate with varied stakeholders. Communicative competence in Afrikaans and isiXhosa would be advantageous.
• A valid unendorsed driver’s license (for a manual transmission vehicle)
• The ability to work after-hours and on weekends from time-to-time.

Other skills and attributes sought:

• Flexibility, self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
• Sound problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
• Strong project management, negotiation, facilitation, lobbying and advocacy skills.
• Knowledge of, and links to networks in the land, food system, environmental and related sectors.
• Strong institutional knowledge of land policy. A proven aptitude for engaging with state-based actors and officials will be an advantage.

CALL FOR INTERNSHIP APPLICATIONS

Monitoring Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Internship

The Surplus People Project (SPP) is a long-established land-rights NGO working with rural communities in the Western and Northern Cape to support their struggles for land, food, climate and gender justice.
SPP is in the process of overhauling its Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) systems to produce outputs which support its activities and boarder mission.
SPP therefore seeks to appoint an MEL intern at its Cape Town office for a period of six months, potentially renewable for up to a year. Preference will be given to young or early career candidates from designated groups.

MEL internship

The successful applicant will assist SPP in the development and implementation of its MEL, performance and reporting systems. They will work closely with the SPP Programme Leads and CEO and liaise with a small team of field-based programme staff.

Key work areas and responsibilities:

Undertake MEL and related tasks, as requested by the research and management staff including:

* Participating in the development and revision of the strategic MEL plans, documents and instruments.
* Assisting to conduct MEL and research activities, to inform SPPs strategic priorities.
* Assist with the coordination, capture and analysis of monthly reports, in addition to quarterly monitoring reports.
* Assist in the collection and preparation of data for auditing and reporting purposes.
* Participate in conducting MEL training and workshops with SPP staff.

Knowledge, skills and attributes sought:

* A demonstrable commitment to social justice and SPP’s values.
* A degree in a relevant academic discipline (e.g. social sciences, development studies, public management, economics, etc.).
* Knowledge of research, participatory methodologies and M&E. A qualification in M&E would an advantage.
* Sound English-language writing skills, with communicative competence in Afrikaans and/or isiXhosa an advantage.
* Relevant documentation confirming the right to reside and work in South Africa.
