World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2026 | “Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work”

On Monday, 15 June 2026, the Free State MEC for Health, Mr. Monyatso Mahlatsi, calls for an end to the abuse of older persons and for stronger, coordinated systems that safeguard their dignity, independence, and rights.

This year’s observance is marked at United Nations Headquarters in New York alongside a major international meeting on the rights of persons with disabilities. As populations age, more people with disabilities are growing older, and many older persons develop disabilities later in life. This overlap demands closer coordination between ageing and disability efforts—especially in protection, care, and community-based support—essential pillars for preventing and addressing elder abuse.

To make access and prevention real in people’s lives, the Free State Department of Health is championing a campaign to make it easier for older persons who are stable on chronic medication to receive their medicines through the Central Chronic Medicine Dispensing and Distribution (CCMDD) programme—via convenient community pick-up points—or through safe, verified home deliveries. This reduces long queues, travel costs, and barriers to care, while promoting dignity and independence.

How to access:

• Visit your nearest clinic or speak to a community health worker to check eligibility and enroll in CCMDD.
• Choose a convenient pick-up point or opt in for safe home delivery.
• Caregivers can collect on behalf of older persons where consent is provided through the *Household Delivery of Chronic Medicines*. Please keep contact details up to date.

Elder abuse remains under-recognized and under-reported. If you see or suspect abuse, speak up. Reach out to your local clinic, social worker, community health worker, or law enforcement. Together, we can protect the rights and wellbeing of older persons across the Free State.

Welcome to Positive Adherence Care Centre (PACC) — a community-driven Non-Profit Organisation dedicated to promoting health, dignity, equality, and hope within our communities. Based in Botshabelo, Free State, PACC provides HIV awareness, adherence support, LGBTQIA+ support services, youth empowerment programmes, health education, psychosocial support, and community outreach initiatives rooted in the spirit of UBUNTU — “I am because we are.”

Our mission is to create safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces where people living with HIV, LGBTQIA+ individuals, youth, and vulnerable communities can access support without stigma or discrimination. Through advocacy, education, referrals, awareness campaigns, dialogues, and community partnerships, we aim to strengthen positive living, mental wellness, human rights, and social inclusion.

At PACC, we believe in compassion, respect, empowerment, and community unity. We continue to serve our communities with limited resources but with a strong passion for changing lives and restoring hope.

Objective of Positive Adherence Care Centre (PACC) in Addressing IDAHOBIT

Positive Adherence Care Centre (PACC) commemorates IDAHOBIT to raise awareness about the discrimination, stigma, violence, and inequalities faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals, while promoting dignity, inclusion, equality, and human rights for all people regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Through this campaign, PACC aims to:
Educate communities about Homophobia, Biphobia, and Transphobia and their harmful impact on mental health, wellbeing, and social inclusion.

Create safe spaces for dialogue, healing, support, and empowerment within communities and across social platforms.
Advocate for equality, respect, and protection of LGBTQIA+ rights while encouraging Ubuntu, compassion, and social cohesion.
Reduce stigma and discrimination by promoting understanding, acceptance, and positive community engagement.
Strengthen mental health awareness and access to supportive services for vulnerable and marginalized individuals.

Encourage communities to stand against hate, bullying, violence, and exclusion in all forms.

Use the month of May as a platform for ongoing conversations, educational dialogues, and awareness campaigns that inspire change and promote inclusivity.
PACC believes that everyone deserves to live freely, safely, and authentically without fear of discrimination or prejudice.
