πŸ’œ MAY IS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH πŸ’œ

Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Month β€” a time to reflect, learn, and support one another.

At the Community Justice Centre (CJC), we recognise that access to justice is not only about the law β€” it is also about dignity, wellbeing, and mental health.

🧠 What this month means: Mental health affects how we think, feel, and act. It influences how we handle stress, relate to others, and make decisions.

Yet many people in our communities:
❗ Suffer in silence
❗ Feel ashamed to speak up
❗ Do not know where to get help

This month is about breaking that silence.

βš–οΈ Why it matters to us at CJC:

Legal problems, family disputes, unemployment, and identity issues can place serious emotional strain on individuals and families.

πŸ‘‰ You are not just a β€œcase” β€” you are a person.
πŸ‘‰ Your mental wellbeing matters.

πŸ“’ SIGNS YOU MAY NEED SUPPORT:

- Constant stress or anxiety

- Feeling overwhelmed or hopeless

- Difficulty sleeping or concentrating

- Withdrawing from others

- Emotional exhaustion

There is no shame in asking for help.

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ FREEDOM DAY | 27 APRIL 2026

Today we celebrate Freedom Day β€” a historic moment in South Africa when, on 27 April 1994, all South Africans voted together for the very first time, marking the birth of our democracy.

This day reminds us of:

βš–οΈ The end of apartheid and oppression

πŸ—³οΈ The power of equal voting rights

πŸ“œ The foundation of our Constitution and human rights

🀝 The ongoing journey toward justice, equality, and dignity for all
Freedom is not just a moment in history β€”
it is a responsibility we carry every day.

At the Community Justice Centre (CJC), we believe:
πŸ‘‰ Freedom means access to justice
πŸ‘‰ Freedom means knowing your rights
πŸ‘‰ Freedom means standing up against injustice
πŸ‘‰ Freedom means empowering communities

As we celebrate today, let us also reflect:

βœ” Are our communities truly free?
βœ” Are justice and equality reaching everyone?
βœ” What role can each of us play in building a better South Africa?

🟒 CJC MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY

β€œTrue freedom is not complete without justice.”
We remain committed to bridging the gap between the law and the people β€” ensuring that freedom is not just celebrated, but experienced by all.

πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦ Happy Freedom Day, South Africa!
Let us continue the journey β€” together.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Parental Responsibilities and Children’s Rights

Every child has rights, but these rights can only be protected when parents, guardians, and caregivers fulfil their responsibilities. Raising a child is not only about providing basic needs β€” it is about guiding, protecting, and nurturing them so they can grow into responsible and confident adults.

πŸ“š 1. Providing Basic Needs
Parents have the responsibility to ensure that children have food, clothing, shelter, healthcare, and education. These are not privileges β€” they are fundamental rights of every child.

❀️ 2. Providing Love, Care, and Emotional Support
Children need love, attention, and encouragement. When parents show care and listen to their children, it helps them develop confidence and emotional well-being.

πŸ›‘οΈ 3. Protecting Children from Harm
Parents must protect their children from abuse, neglect, violence, and exploitation. A safe home environment is essential for children to grow and thrive.

πŸ“– 4. Guiding and Teaching Values
Parents play an important role in teaching children respect, honesty, responsibility, and discipline. Positive guidance helps children make good choices in life.

πŸ—£οΈ 5. Listening to Children’s Voices
Children have the right to express their views. Parents should listen to their children and consider their opinions in matters affecting their lives.

🏫 6. Supporting Education and Development
Parents should encourage learning, support school attendance, and help children develop their talents and abilities.

🀝 7. Being Positive Role Models
Children learn by watching adults. When parents show kindness, responsibility, and respect, children are more likely to adopt the same values.

✨ Remember:
Children’s rights and parental responsibilities go hand in hand. When parents fulfil their responsibilities, children are more likely to grow into healthy, respectful, and responsible members of society.

πŸ“’ Strong families build strong communities. Protect children’s rights today for a better tomorrow.

What we love to see!

What we love to see!

You touch this one, I kill you with my bare hands. That's my last born (3rd). He fell asleep in the car whilst we went to the barber. He had said, "Daddy, can I come with you?" So I took him along. I never became a father by mistake! I chose. I'm not doing him a favor by taking care of him. It's my job, and I'll protect it with my everything till I take my last breath. I have to pay for his fees, feed him, bath him, play with him, validate him, listen to him. It's my job. He has to do better than me in life. I started from a rough place; he has to start at a better place. I never had a father who carried me like this. Mine was present, but absent. I felt the impact of that, and vowed, "should I have a child, I'LL BE THERE"... Don't ever make the mistake of repeating the vicious cycle of your life. Be better for those coming after you. Let your pain make you better, not bitter. Let your pain make you wiser, stronger. I'm not ashamed of my scars; they made me a better man! Asbonge ✌🏾️

NB: And by the way, my Masters thesis was on "The Role of a Father in the Life of a Child" (check it out on Google scholar; published). That's how passionate I am on the subject 🀭
