Dear Absent Fathers —
Never assume the mother turned the child against you. A child can recognize a father who doesn't want to be involved in their life.

Your absence is the biggest poison. Full stop.

Because children are not stupid. They feel everything before they can articulate anything. They notice who shows up to the recital and who sent a text instead. They notice whose name comes up on the caller ID and whose never does. They notice birthdays that pass without a phone call, promises that never became reality, and a empty chair at every table that mattered.

No mother had to say a single word.

And the cruelest part of this narrative — this idea that she poisoned them — is that it hands you an excuse to avoid the mirror entirely. If she's the villain then you never have to look at your own choices. You never have to sit with the reality that your children grew up learning your absence before they learned your voice.

That story is convenient. It is not true.

Children don't need to be coached to feel abandoned. They feel it naturally, quietly, deeply — in ways that follow them into every relationship they'll ever have as adults.

You weren't kept away. You just never showed up.

And one day your child will be old enough to say that out loud themselves.

No coaching required.
