More than a year ago, Wildlife Rescue responded to a call from Helen about a grounded Verreaux's Eagle-Owl in serious distress.
On arrival, Lindy found the owl weak, emaciated and severely dehydrated, and it was clear that without intervention her chances of survival were slim. Following her rescue by WLR, this magnificent owl began her long journey back to health.
Fondly nicknamed Madeline by Helen, the owl spent approximately six months undergoing rehabilitation at CROW before finally being released back into the very area where she was found
For a few months after her release, Madeline remained in the area, occasionally making appearances before eventually disappearing from sight. But Helen never stopped looking out for her.
This weekend, almost exactly one year to the date of her release, there was Madeline, back on the property, looking healthy, strong and thriving.
Stories like this remind us why we do what we do. Every rescue, every late-night call-out, every hour of rehabilitation is done with the hope that one day an animal can return to the wild and live the life it was meant to live.
Seeing Madeline thriving in her natural environment is the best outcome we could ever hope for and a powerful reminder that rescue, rehabilitation and release truly do make a difference.
Thank you, Helen, for caring enough to make that first call, and for never stopping looking out for your feathered friend. 🦉❤️
