Today we honour the courage and sacrifice of the youth of 16 June 1975, who stood up for their right to education and a better future.

As we commemorate Youth Day 2026, we also recognise the challenges facing today's youth β€” school violence, teen pregnancy, substance abuse, exploitation and many other social issues that threaten their potential.

To you, the YOUTH in our community - you have the potential and power to raise your voices, to take ownership, to work hard and to become the leaders who inspire hope - the changemakers!

Although Sunday had bad visibility, shark nets have now been removed and bathing prohibited at Umgababa, Karridene, Winklespruit, Pipeline and Isipingo.

Nets at Toti Main and Warner Beach are at this point still in place and these two beaches are presently still open for bathing.

R8.5 MILLION WORTH OF SUSPECTED STOLEN PROPERTY RECOVERED IN MAJOR ILOVU OPERATION

Members of the Durban Metro Police Dog Unit conducted a successful intelligence-led operation in the Illovu area following information regarding a truck and trailer allegedly linked to a theft case.

While conducting patrols, officers located a truck, trailer, and two shipping containers matching the description circulated through law enforcement channels. Further investigation revealed that the truck, trailer, and one of the containers were linked to various criminal cases under investigation by SAPS.

With the assistance of the Amanzimtoti Fire Department, access was gained to the containers, where a large quantity of suspected stolen property was recovered. The scene was secured and processed by the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).

Recovered items included motorcycles, vehicle parts, household appliances, furniture, clothing, tools, tyres, commercial goods, and various other items believed to be linked to criminal activities.

The estimated value of the recovered property is approximately R8.5 million.

The operation was conducted jointly by:

● Durban Metro Police Dog Unit
● Amanzimtoti Fire Department
● MSC Logistics Representatives
● Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC)

All recovered property was seized and booked into police custody pending further investigation.

Well done to all members involved for their dedication, vigilance, and commitment to combating crime and recovering stolen property

Government has reiterated its position that illegal foreign nationals must be processed in accordance with the country’s immigration laws, including deportation. Foreign nationals who are legally in the country, but wish to voluntarily return to their countries of origin, will be assisted through the Department of Home Affairs and their respective embassies.

This position was reaffirmed by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mmamoloko Kubayi, who led an inter-ministerial delegation to Durban to assess and intervene in the situation involving foreign nationals currently camping outside Home Affairs offices on Che Guevara Road and in Sherwood. The Minister emphasised that government has no intention of establishing refugee camps in South Africa. She urged legally documented foreign nationals to reintegrate into their communities, while those who are unwilling to return to their places will be sent to Lindela Repatriation Centre for processing.

EThekwini Municipality Mayor, Cyril Xaba, accompanied the Minister during the visit and indicated that the City stands ready to facilitate the repatriation of those wishing to return to their home countries, in collaboration with all relevant stakeholders.

Plans are currently underway to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of Malawian nationals in Sherwood, Durban. The Government of Malawi has dispatched buses to assist with the process, and these are expected to arrive in Durban by the weekend.

Officials from the Department of Home Affairs are on site conducting the necessary administrative processes, including verification of identities and the capturing of fingerprints.
