Twelve suspects were arrested for attempted abalone poaching in the Cape Point section of Table Mountain National Park after an intelligence driven operation by SANParks Environmental Crime Investigation unit. They were intercepted on Tuesday evening while allegedly heading into the protected area. Authorities searched two vehicles and seized a large quantity of diving equipment believed to be intended for illegal abalone harvesting. The suspects were detained at Simon’s Town SAPS and are expected to appear in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 11 June 2026. SANParks described the operation as a major success in preventing coordinated poaching activities and protecting marine resources.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

We are seeing hundreds of newly hatched tortoises across our area. These tiny hatchlings are only about the size of an R1 coin and can be extremely difficult to spot, especially on roads and pathways.

We kindly ask all motorists to be extra vigilant and keep a careful lookout for these little survivors. Every hatchling matters. With tortoise populations facing increasing challenges, it is vital that as many as possible survive and reach adulthood.

A moment of caution behind the wheel could save a life.

Thank you for helping to protect our precious wildlife.

Southern Giant Petrel Rescued at Die Plaat, Struisbaai

The Southern Giant Petrel (Macronectes giganteus) is one of the largest seabirds in the Southern Ocean, known for its impressive wingspan, remarkable endurance, and important role in the marine ecosystem. These powerful birds spend much of their lives at sea and are a special sight along our coastline.

Recently, an injured Southern Giant Petrel was spotted on Die Plaat, Struisbaai, by a local fisherman, who promptly reported it to us. Following the report, Stefan and Lisma, together with Neil, went out to collect the bird and ensure it received the help it needed.

We are pleased to report that the petrel will be safely on its way to the rescue centre, where it will receive professional care. We pray that this magnificent bird makes a full recovery and can one day return to the wild where it belongs.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in reporting, assisting, and supporting this rescue effort. Your vigilance and willingness to act make a real difference.

You are our eyes and ears.

🌊 HELP US CLEAN OUR BEACHES 🌊
The
Freddie Conservation Project

Following the devastating floods of the past few weeks, our beaches have been inundated with all kinds of debris.

We kindly ask that when you go for a stroll along the beach, please take a few bags with you and help collect any litter or debris you come across.
There are so much small debri that can be picked up. Every bag filled makes a difference.

Much of this debris can cause serious harm to our marine life, birdlife, and other wildlife. Every item removed helps protect our natural environment and keeps our beaches beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

🐢 Protect our marine life
🦅 Safeguard our wildlife
🌊 Help restore our beaches
🤝 Make a difference in your community

Your support, no matter how small, is greatly appreciated.

Together, we can make a difference.

Thank you for caring.
