A Call for Funding That Addresses Real Needs and Promotes Fair Access to Opportunities in Yemen
Yemen is facing a critical humanitarian deterioration as a result of the ongoing conflict and economic collapse, which has produced a society suffering from acute levels of food insecurity, absence of basic services, escalation of community conflicts over scarce resources, and a worrying increase in cases of violence and violations affecting the most vulnerable groups.
Despite the influx of many international funding opportunities directed at the country, a large part of it remains far from the actual priorities of Yemenis. This has caused frustration among field workers and imposed ethical challenges on local organizations committed to responding to real needs. It has also led to the marginalization of many active community-based organizations, while some local and international organizations continue to deplete massive budgets to produce hollow "media figures" that lack tangible impact on the ground, in light of the absence of an effective government role in guiding and governing these interventions.
We call on the donor community to abandon ready-made programs and approaches imposed from the outside, and to adopt more flexible and fair funding strategies. These strategies must ensure equal opportunities, limit the monopoly of resources by influential organizations, and grant trust to local community-based organizations to design and implement interventions stemming from the real needs of the population, thereby contributing to creating a sustainable impact and enhancing communities' resilience.
