Schools, colleges, universities, early-learning programs, and education nonprofits need people across student support, admissions, advancement, finance, HR, operations, technology, research, communications, programs, and leadership.

If you are exploring the sector, combine an environment with a function. For example:

• university + student affairs
• K-12 + operations
• early learning + family engagement
• education nonprofit + programs
• community college + workforce development

When you read a mission-driven job description, what is the one missing detail most likely to make you pause or move on?

Is it the salary range, work arrangement, reporting line, team size, decision authority, actual day-to-day work, application timeline, or something else?

Hiring teams: which detail do candidates most often ask you to clarify?

Choose one and tell us why it matters. Specific answers can help make future opportunities easier to evaluate.

Interview preparation does not require memorizing an answer to every possible question.

Try preparing three adaptable stories instead:

• Mission alignment: when your work connected to a meaningful outcome
• Functional expertise: evidence that you can do the role's core work
• Judgment: a decision made amid competing priorities, limited resources, or uncertainty

For each one, be ready to explain the context, your responsibility, what you did, the evidence you used, and what you learned. That gives you a concrete base for different questions while keeping your answers natural.

Foundation List's current interview guide explores the three areas nonprofit employers often evaluate and the questions candidates can use to assess fit:

A useful finalist exercise should help answer one real hiring question.

Try a simple design check:

• What job-related capability are we evaluating?
• What is the smallest realistic artifact that could show it?
• What evidence will every reviewer use?

Tell candidates the expected time, format, context, and criteria before they begin. Keep the exercise limited in scope, tied to actual responsibilities, and respectful of their time. Avoid requesting an extensive strategic plan or other free consulting work.

Which part of a work-sample brief is easiest for hiring teams to leave unclear?
