Smoky Mountain Trail Riders We volunteer our time in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to clear trails, pack supplies by horse and mule, and support other volunteers.

Tom Faulkner and a small group of people organized the first Smoky Mountain Trail Riders meeting on November 4, 1982 at the Maryville, TN courthouse. In March 1983 legal formation of our club, its bylaws, and non-profit status was made official with the State of Tennessee. Our first trail cleanup was on Gold Mine Junction in February 1984 with 12 men working 78 hours. Over the years members have v

olunteered their time and hard work by completing chainsaw certification programs and clearing downed trees from trails. We have also assisted in the repair and rebuilding of Appalachian Trail shelters, building hitching racks, packing supplies and food for crews working in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and packed out trash. In the spring of 2010 SMTR's performed 266 hours of trail maintenance clearing a total of 353 blow-downs. We look forward to helping again this year. Our Club meetings occur the Second Monday of January, March, May, July, September, and November at 6:30pm at the Alcoa Highway Shoney's Restaurant. We also have two fun rides a year at Bandy Creek Stables, in the Big South Fork National Recreation Area in the spring and the fall.
