Protecting Our Legacy
New Brunswick mat ho**ers have talked for years about the importance of documenting the hooked mats that cover the floors of New Brunswick homes. These are mats made by our grandmothers, mothers and friends to keep their families warm and bring colour into their homes. A network of volunteers from all regions of the province has created a New Brunswick Mat Registry to documen

t these mats and to preserve the stories behind them. Our Mission
• To capture the stories and culture of the people who produced these mats/articles that enhanced the comfort of the early homes of New Brunswick and continue to add to the fabric of our lives today.
• To develop a database documenting mats/articles hooked in New Brunswick more than 25 years ago with images and individual histories documenting various influences on their creation

Préservons notre patrimoine
Depuis des années, les hookeuses de tapis du Nouveau-Brunswick parlent de l’importance de consigner les ouvrages qui ornaient les planchers des maisons de la province. Ils ont été faits par nos grands-mères, nos mères et nos amies pour tenir au chaud leur famille et égayer leur foyer. Un réseau de bénévoles des diverses régions de la province a créé un registre des tapis du Nouveau-Brunswick pour en conserver une description et l’histoire entourant leur confection. Notre mission
• Capturer les histoires et la culture des personnes qui ont fabriqué ces tapis et articles qui, autrefois, ont ajouté du confort aux maisons du Nouveau-Brunswick et qui, aujourd’hui, continuent à enrichir notre tissu social.
• Élaborer une base de données consignant les tapis et autres articles hookés au Nouveau- Brunswick il y plus de 25 ans et comportant des images et des histoires qui renseignent sur ce qui a influencé leur création.

A beautiful piece from the Historical Museum of Tracadie collection featured on their page.

Un tapis houqué, aussi appelé tapis crocheté ou tapis hooké, probablement de l'anglais hooked rug, est une forme d'artisanat nord-américain.
Il consiste à fabriquer des tapis en passant à travers une base solide comme une toile de jute, de lin ou les fils de chaîne d'un tapis. Les boucles sont poussées à travers le matériau au moyen d'une houque ; un crochet monté sur un manche.

This is a great Nova Scotia story reflecting pride and the role of rug hooking in a community.

Inverness County is home to a vibrant new rug-hooking program, which stitches together tradition, mentorship and community spirit.

With support from La Société Saint-Pierre and funding from the North Inverness Community Health Board, people in Chéticamp are handing down wool-dyeing wisdom and design skills to eager new hands.

Workshops teach everything from stamping burlap to making hooks and frames, ensuring this cherished Acadian craft lives on in the next generation.

“There’s a real sense of pride and belief we can save this tradition,” said rug ho**er Lisette Aucoin-Bourgeois of La Société Saint-Pierre.

We are so pleased and excited to share the link to the NB Mat Registry's Virtual Exhibit https://mats-tapisnb.com/

It was launched June 14 with over 90 rug ho**ers and guests who made the day even more special!
