We had a blast out on Deep River today! The weather was just perfect, with enough cloud cover to keep the sun from
roasting us. We picked up some trash, saw some sites that can use a special, more targeted cleanup in the future and had a great time talking and seeing nature in all its glory.

Special thank you to Will Seeley and Joanie from GetOutdoors Pedal & Paddle, Eric and co-workers at Southwest Park Marina, and Stormwater Smart’s/PTRC’s Danica Heflin for helping this event come together! Happy Guilford Creek Week to all 💧☀️

Thanks to all the paddlers today, all our volunteers and supporters, love yall so much. ❤️🏆

Swim Guide Week 3 Results!

All sites on Deep River passed this week for recreation and swimming! We have had nothing but ☀️🕶️!! E.coli levels are higher after significant rainfall; we will most likely see low levels this season if the drought persists!

Enjoy the weekend and be safe out on the river, it’s going to be HOT! 🥵

Often when we are out on the river we encounter snakes! I’ll admit, I was a Riverkeeper with an irrational snake phobia. After learning more about the type of snakes we have in the Piedmont, I felt a lot better! ❤️🐍

All creatures deserve respect and many folks can’t tell the difference between a venomous Copperhead and a non-venomous Northern Water Snake! Here is a profile of both by our intern, Katelyn Garcia! Notice, the Copperhead has Hershey Kiss shaped patterns on its sides! That helped me remember the difference, while in the field! 💪🏻😉

Our interns from UNC-Greensboro Biology and Davidson College Aquarium Science will be creating some new content for our social media! 🛜💻👾

Students Avery and Katelyn will be creating species profiles of Deep River insects, reptiles, endangered species and more! 🕷️🐍🐚🐟🦦🦇

Perez, has a special interest in synthetic chemicals and water pollutants and will be creating content about these substances as well as how our legislative system works in NC. This way, we can give you all a pathway to write your County Commissioners and State Representatives! 🇺🇸💧

Our first post is from Perez, on the synthetic chemical 1,4 dioxane. This chemical is a problem in Deep River and is not federally regulated, although it needs to be!

Swim Guide Week 2 Results are out!!

We certainly got some rain ⛈️ on Tuesday which contributed to elevated E.coli levels on the Deep River! We had only one site fail this week, at City Lake Marina, with levels at or above the measurable threshold! This is most likely from pet waste and goose waste entering the lake from the stormwater rush.

Have a great weekend everyone and stay safe! 😎☀️💧🛶🕶️
